The call

Ruangguru still owns Indonesian K-12 tutoring through teachers, curriculum, and physical centers, while free AI chatbots quietly chip away at its paid homework help.

Ruangguru teaches Indonesian students through an app that answers homework questions, physical tutoring centers, and deals with schools and the government. Its homework app is getting harder to sell because ChatGPT and Google's Gemini do the same thing for free, and the company has not raised new money in four years or grown its staff since 2022 layoffs. The one thing that could save the picture is if Ruangguru moves fast enough toward selling to schools and the government instead of individual students, but without a funding announcement or stock market debut by the end of 2026, it will look like the company is just trying to survive rather than grow again.

Why
01
AI pressure: Free general chatbots: ChatGPT, Google Gemini. Free ChatGPT and Gemini answer homework instantly in Bahasa Indonesia, hollowing out Roboguru's paid Q&A subscribers. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Google (Gemini for Education inside Workspace). Google could fold free AI tutoring into Workspace for Education, undercutting Ruangguru's consumer subscription tier. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. 300,000+ teacher network, national curriculum content, physical Brain Academy centers, and government B2G contracts.
What would change this call
Ruangguru announces a new priced funding round or IPO filing by end of 2026. Would show investors still value the business despite the funding gap since 2021.
Public reporting shows Roboguru paid subscriber numbers falling year over year. Would confirm free AI chatbots are eroding its core consumer Q&A product.
Ruangguru discloses B2G or physical Brain Academy revenue overtaking consumer Q&A revenue. Would show a real shift toward defensible institutional lines instead of slow drift.

  • Sector fragility shown by domestic peer Zenius's 2024 shutdown after $40M raised. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Ruangguru profitable in 2026?
No audited financials are public. A single vendor blog claims EBITDA positivity in core segments by late 2024, but this is unverified. Ruangguru has raised no new funding since April 2021, which is consistent with either self-funding maturity or stalled investor interest.
Could AI like ChatGPT replace Ruangguru's Roboguru product?
Roboguru's core homework Q&A function is directly substitutable by free tools like ChatGPT and Gemini, and this erosion is happening in real time as of 2025. Ruangguru's defensible layers are its B2G contracts, 300,000+ teacher network, and 100+ physical Brain Academy centers, not the AI Q&A feature itself.
Who owns Ruangguru?
Ruangguru (PT Ruang Raya Indonesia) is privately held, founded in April 2014 by Adamas Belva Syah Devara and Muhammad Iman Usman. Backers include East Ventures, UOB Venture Management, General Atlantic, GGV Capital, and Tiger Global, which co-led a $55M round in April 2021, the last disclosed funding event.
Who is Ruangguru's biggest competitor?
Domestically, Zenius was Ruangguru's closest edtech peer but raised about $40M before shutting down in 2024. Brainly and Quipper remain active regional rivals, but the more pressing competitive threat as of 2025 is free general-purpose AI chatbots eroding Roboguru's homework-help use case.
How much funding has Ruangguru raised, and when was the last round?
Ruangguru has disclosed roughly $205M to $213M in total funding across about 9 to 11 rounds, per Crustdata as of 2026. Its last confirmed round was $55M led by Tiger Global Management with GGV Capital in April 2021, meaning over five years without a new disclosed raise.
What is Ruangguru worth?
The last confirmed valuation was roughly $540M following a $150M Series C led by General Atlantic and GGV Capital in December 2019. No updated valuation has been publicly confirmed since, and blog speculation about a 2026 IPO or pre-IPO round remains unverified.
