The call

SailPoint still owns the regulated enterprise identity relationship, but its next act depends on AI ARR growing fast enough to hit its own FY2029 numbers.

SailPoint sells software that tracks and controls who gets access to which company data and systems, and it has built deep roots inside large regulated businesses through years of integration and audit records that are hard to rip out. Microsoft (through Entra ID Governance) and Okta are pushing similar features as cheaper, bundled add-ons, and generic AI tools could eventually handle simpler access tasks, though SailPoint's locked-in audit history and trust with compliance teams still protect it in the biggest enterprises. The real test over the next 2 to 3 years is whether SailPoint can make money from new AI-powered features (expected to be 40% of future growth) or whether those stall while Microsoft nibbles away at mid-sized customers.

Why
01
AI pressure: Microsoft Entra ID Governance and AI agents needing their own managed identities. AI agents multiply non-human identities to govern, but Microsoft could bundle that governance into Entra instead of paying SailPoint. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft (Entra ID Governance). Microsoft bundles identity governance into its stack and is contesting mid-market accounts, though SailPoint's regulated enterprise core has held so far. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Deep integrations into enterprise systems, audit-trail lock-in, and regulatory trust that switching would put at risk.
What would change this call
SailPoint reports AI/agentic ARR as % of net new ARR in upcoming quarterly filings. Shows whether the FY2029 AI monetization bet is on track or stalling below 25%.
SailPoint enterprise-segment net new ARR growth rate in next 2-3 quarters. Deceleration below ~15% would signal Microsoft/Okta erosion of core business.
Thoma Bravo's ~88% stake position changes (sale, sell-down, or M&A action). Would indicate PE firm's confidence level and reduce overhang-driven volatility.

  • Microsoft and Okta bundling governance features could erode mid-market accounts. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is SailPoint profitable?
Not on a GAAP basis. Net loss was $235.8M for the nine months ended Oct 31, 2024, improved from $308M a year earlier. Management claims non-GAAP profitability, but SailPoint has not reported a GAAP net profit as of its Feb 2025 IPO filings.
Who owns SailPoint?
Thoma Bravo, a private equity firm, took SailPoint private in August 2022 for $6.9 billion, then re-IPO'd it on Nasdaq Feb 13, 2025 while retaining roughly 88% ownership and board control, making SailPoint a controlled company.
Could AI replace SailPoint's product?
Unlikely to replace it outright. Generic AI can compress rules-based tasks like access certification, but SailPoint's audit-trail data and deep enterprise integrations are hard to replicate, and it launched its own Agentic Fabric platform for AI-agent governance on May 11, 2026.
Who is SailPoint's biggest competitor?
Microsoft's Entra ID Governance and Okta are the main pressure points, bundling identity governance into broader platforms as of mid-2026; Microsoft is strongest in Microsoft-centric estates but weaker in the messy multi-vendor regulated environments SailPoint dominates.
Is SailPoint a public or private company?
SailPoint is publicly traded on Nasdaq under ticker SAIL as of Feb 13, 2025, after re-IPOing at $23/share and raising about $1.38 billion, but Thoma Bravo still controls roughly 88% of shares.
How fast is SailPoint growing?
SailPoint's total ARR passed $1 billion by Q3 FY2026 (reported Dec 10, 2025), and FY2026 revenue reached about $1.071 billion, up roughly 24% year over year, per the company's own reported financials.
