The call

Sana no longer competes as a standalone startup, it now rides Workday's data and distribution while depending on Google's Gemini, a partner that is also a rival.

Sana builds AI assistants that help workers in human resources and finance departments do their jobs faster. It is hard to copy because it sits inside Workday, which already stores sensitive employee and payroll information for most big companies, and it has all the legal approvals to use that data. Microsoft and Salesforce cannot easily build the same thing without getting companies to switch away from Workday itself. The big question is Google: Sana uses Google's Gemini AI engine as its brain, which helps Sana today but also means Google could decide to compete directly and cut Sana off from the tool it depends on.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google Gemini Enterprise. Gemini now runs Sana's agents by default, but Google also sells its own competing Gemini Enterprise agents in the same market. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft Copilot. Copilot keeps expanding into HR and finance tasks but still has no HR/finance system of record like Workday's to anchor agent actions. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Sits inside Workday's regulated HR/finance data, compliance certifications, and 65%+ Fortune 500 distribution, hard to replicate without replatforming Workday itself.
What would change this call
ServiceNow announces ITSM feature response or pricing move after Sana's May 2026 ITSM launch. Would show ServiceNow treating Sana as a real threat to its core turf.
Google Gemini Enterprise ships agentic HR/finance features competing directly with Sana in 2026. Would show Sana's model partner becoming a rival at the workflow layer.
Sana product release cadence slows below quarterly in second half of 2026. Would show integration drag inside Workday slowing competitive response.

Questions people ask
Is Sana still an independent company or did it get acquired?
Sana was acquired by Workday, with the deal closing November 4, 2025 for approximately $1.1 billion. Sana now operates as an internal Workday division branded 'Sana from Workday,' having gone from a $500M valuation in October 2024 to this exit within about a year.
Is Sana profitable?
Sana was not profitable as an independent company; Forbes reported it had surpassed $20M ARR by October 2024 but was not yet profitable. Since the November 2025 Workday acquisition, Sana's finances are folded into Workday and no separate Sana profitability figures are disclosed.
Could AI replace what Sana does?
Sana's original AI-generated e-learning content is commoditized as models like GPT and Gemini directly generate training material. But its post-acquisition moat, sitting inside Workday's regulated HR/finance system of record reaching 11,000+ organizations as of November 4, 2025, is harder for a standalone model to replicate.
Who owns Sana now?
Workday, Inc. (NASDAQ: WDAY) owns Sana, having completed its acquisition on November 4, 2025 for approximately $1.1 billion. Sana operates as 'Sana from Workday,' embedded in Workday's HR and finance platform reaching over 75 million users.
Who is Sana's biggest competitor?
ServiceNow directly contests Sana's newly launched IT Service Management product from May 21, 2026, while Salesforce's Agentforce and Google's Gemini Enterprise compete in overlapping enterprise agent categories. Google is unusual as both a rival and Sana's default model provider since May 28, 2026.
What happened to Sana founder Joel Hellermark after the Workday deal?
Joel Hellermark's title shifted from Founder/CEO of Sana to SVP and GM of AI at Workday by March 2026, then to Chief AI Officer, Workday, referenced in a July 22, 2026 press release, reflecting Sana's absorption into Workday's organizational structure.
