The call

Satchel holds real ground in daily school workflows but is spending its remaining runway trying to out build free AI tools and richer MIS rivals at the same time.

Satchel makes homework and classroom management software used by about one-third of UK secondary schools. The company has real stickiness because schools have built routines around it and store years of records there, which is hard to abandon. But Satchel is now trying to expand into a bigger product called a Management Information System (like SIMS and Arbor already do) where it faces much bigger, better-funded competitors, and its AI homework helper does the same thing free tools like ChatGPT already do. The make-or-break moment comes in September 2026 when schools renew contracts on the new Satchel One platform: if it has missing features or technical problems compared to what schools used before, many could switch to a rival, and a new round of funding would probably improve Satchel's chances significantly.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT, Google Gemini for Education, Microsoft Copilot. Satchel's Sidekick AI generates quizzes and lesson plans, but free tools inside Gemini and Copilot do the same job at no cost. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Arbor, SIMS (Education Software Solutions), Bromcom, Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams. Satchel is pushing into cloud MIS against better funded rivals already winning tenders, while free classroom tools sit next door unblocked. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Deep daily usage and compliance grade records in around 4,500 schools make switching costly mid year.

Questions people ask
Is Satchel profitable in 2026?
No public profitability figures exist for Satchel. Revenue estimates vary wildly, from ZoomInfo's roughly $5.3 million (2026-07-06) to Latka's roughly $5 million ARR (2024-11), both third-party and unverified. No audited financials or profit disclosure have been found as of mid-2026.
Who owns Satchel (Satchel One)?
Satchel is privately held and venture-backed, founded in 2011 by Naimish Gohil. Investors include LocalGlobe, which led a £2.4 million round in January 2017, plus Guinness Global Investors from 2020. No acquisition, merger, or IPO of Satchel itself has been found as of mid-2026.
Could AI like ChatGPT replace Satchel's homework tools?
Satchel's own Sidekick AI feature generates homework, quizzes, and lesson plans, functionally similar to free tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini for Education, and Microsoft Copilot. This content-generation layer is exposed to substitution, though Satchel's statutory welfare and attendance records are harder to replace with generic AI.
Who is Satchel's biggest competitor?
In its legacy homework niche, ClassCharts is cited as a direct alternative. In its new cloud MIS ambitions, Satchel faces entrenched incumbent SIMS plus Arbor (owned by The Key, ~£30.5 million turnover, FY Aug 2022) and Bromcom (~£9.8 million turnover, year ended 2021-12-31).
How many schools use Satchel One?
Satchel claims 4,500+ schools globally across 20+ countries as of mid-2026 (vendor-claimed, teamsatchel.com, 2026-06-30). An earlier company-linked source cited 1,600+ schools and roughly one-third of UK secondary schools, with dates and methodology unclear.
Is Satchel expanding beyond homework software?
Yes. Since at least March 2023, Satchel has marketed Satchel One's expansion into a full cloud-based Management Information System (MIS), directly targeting the market held by SIMS, Arbor, and Bromcom, with rollout described as ongoing through mid-2026.
