The call

stc's position rests on a state-granted license and majority state ownership, not on outrunning AI or any single competitor.

STC is Saudi Arabia's largest telephone and internet provider, owned mostly by the Saudi government's investment fund. It is very hard to replace because the government only allows three phone companies to operate in the country, STC owns the physical cables and radio frequencies it needs, and the Saudi government owns most of the company and wants it to succeed. AI tools like ChatGPT cannot take over because they cannot create phone networks or get government licenses. The one thing to watch is whether STC finishes a deal to build artificial intelligence data centers with a partner called Center3 by mid-2026, which could add new business but is not needed for the company to survive.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI is a tool stc sells and deploys, via the Humain data-center JV and network automation, not a force taking its customers away. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Zain KSA and Mobily. Both rivals compete hard in the same licensed 3-player market, but neither has pulled meaningful share from stc's roughly 72% domestic revenue position. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. A government-granted operating license in a 3-player regulated market, plus spectrum, fiber, and 16 submarine cables that nobody can legally or physically replicate.
What would change this call
Humain/Center3 AI data-center JV reaches definitive agreement or collapses within 6 months. Shows whether stc's AI-infrastructure growth bet is materializing beyond an MoU.
Satellite-to-mobile service commercial launch, targeted late 2026, occurs on schedule. Indicates stc can execute new connectivity offerings without landing-right competition.
PIF ownership stake in stc falls below 50% or new foreign telecom licenses are granted in Saudi Arabia. Would signal erosion of the state-backed, licensed-oligopoly moat protecting stc.

  • Delay of commercial satellite-to-mobile service launch targeted for late 2026. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Saudi Telecom Company (STC) profitable in 2026?
Yes. STC reported Q1 2026 net profit of SAR 3.70bn (about $984m), up 12.0% YoY on a normalized basis, on revenue of SAR 19.94bn (up 3.8% YoY), per results reported April 29, 2026.
Who owns STC (Saudi Telecom)?
Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF) is the majority owner, holding 62% as of a November 2024 sale of a 2% stake for about $1bn, down from 64% after the 2021 secondary offering.
Could AI replace STC's business?
No. STC's core revenue depends on an exclusive government telecom license, owned spectrum, fiber and 16 submarine cables that AI cannot replicate; AI is a tool STC deploys via the Humain/Center3 JV and Huawei's Green Telco Cloud, launched June 2026, not a threat to its core.
Who is STC's biggest competitor in Saudi Arabia?
STC operates in a closed 3-player oligopoly with Mobily (about 12.8 million subscribers, majority owned by UAE's e&) and Zain KSA. STC itself claims roughly 72% of domestic telecom revenue per its 2025 annual report.
Is STC financially stable enough to be a safe employer?
Yes. STC posted record FY2025 revenue of SAR 77.82bn (about $20.7bn, up 2.5% YoY) as of December 30, 2025, and has committed to quarterly dividends of SAR 0.55/share through Q3 2027.
What stake does STC hold in Telefonica?
STC acquired a 9.9% stake in Spain's Telefonica for about €2.1bn on September 6, 2023, becoming its largest single shareholder, prompting Spain's SEPI to take a counterbalancing 10% stake.
