The call

A century-old aid network with deep field access is shrinking under US federal funding cuts, not AI or corporate competition.

Save the Children runs aid programs in over 100 countries helping children in poor and crisis areas. It is hard to replace because it has built real relationships with governments and has workers on the ground everywhere, but right now it is shrinking badly after losing over 300 million dollars in US federal money in early 2025. The biggest question is whether the US government funding situation gets better or stays worse, because that funding loss is the real threat to the organization, not competition from other charities or new technology.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI is not displacing field aid delivery, though it may eventually trim back-office and donor-analytics costs. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: None apparent. No corporate rival is taking share; the real pressure is the US federal government pulling humanitarian funding. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Century-long government access, field infrastructure in 100+ countries, and a diversified UK/US/international donor base.
What would change this call
Whether Save the Children US announces another layoff round or office closures in 2026. Would show the funding-driven contraction is continuing, not stabilizing.
Whether Janti Soeripto's CEO status is confirmed or a successor is formally named by mid-2026. Would resolve current leadership ambiguity and signal organizational stability.
Whether US federal humanitarian grants to Save the Children fall further in FY26/FY27 filings. Would show whether the $300M+ government funding hole is deepening or being offset.
Key numbers
  • Lost $300M+ in US federal funding (2025)
  • Save the Children UK income hit £305M (2024)
  • Cut ~300 of 1,000 US-based jobs (March 2025)
Named risks
  • Further US federal foreign-aid cuts beyond the $300M+ already lost in 2025. Severity: high
  • Additional restructuring waves from SCI 'Organisation of the Future' or SC UK 'Refocus for Impact'. Severity: high
  • Leadership ambiguity: conflicting reports on CEO Janti Soeripto's status as of mid-2026. Severity: medium
  • Israel's 2026 NGO re-registration and decertification of 37 organizations threatens regional access. Severity: medium
  • Unpredictable surge demand from Sudan, Gaza, and Middle East crises straining stretched budgets. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Save the Children laying off staff in 2026?
Save the Children has been in multi-year contraction since 2024: SCI planned to put 500+ of 1,750 HQ/regional staff at risk in August 2024, and Save the Children US cut about 300 of 1,000 US positions in March 2025 after losing $300M+ in federal funding, per Philanthropy.com, July 2025.
Could AI replace Save the Children?
No. Save the Children's core value is physical field access, government/UN accreditation, and 100+ years of donor trust across 100+ countries, none of which AI can replicate. The org uses AI as a tool (a child-protection chatbot and a DataKind/Microsoft data-query tool, both from 2024) rather than being displaced by it.
Who is the CEO of Save the Children right now?
As of Save the Children US's own June 18, 2026 story, Janti Soeripto is referred to as current President and CEO, though a CBS Face the Nation transcript dated May 10, 2026 called her 'former' CEO, an unresolved discrepancy worth verifying before assuming a leadership change.
What is Save the Children's biggest competitor?
Save the Children doesn't lose donors to rivals the way a business loses customers; it coexists with peers like UNICEF, IRC, World Vision, and Norwegian Refugee Council. IRC announced staff cuts the same day as Save the Children, August 12, 2024, reflecting sector-wide funding pressure, not competitive share loss.
Is Save the Children financially stable?
Save the Children US reported flat FY2024 total revenue of $920.5M, including $443.2M in government grants, per its Form 990. But it then lost over $300M in US federal funding in 2025, forcing office closures and job cuts, so 2025-2026 financials look materially worse than FY2024.
Why did Save the Children lose so much funding in 2025?
The US government eliminated 5,800 of 6,200 USAID awards and 4,100 of 9,100 State Department grants sector-wide starting February 2025, and Save the Children US alone lost more than $300M in federal funding, triggering layoffs and country-office closures, per Philanthropy.com, July 11, 2025.
