Scalapay
Scalapay lets Italian and European shoppers split purchases into installments at checkout.
Scalapay's checkout business keeps growing and nearing profitability, but its $1B valuation hasn't been re-tested by investors in over four years.
Scalapay lets people in Italy split purchases into smaller payments over time, and it actually makes money doing it. The company has a license and real merchants, which sounds protective, but Klarna already showed up in Italy with more money and artificial intelligence to cut costs, and new EU rules coming in late 2026 will make the buy-now-pay-later checkout easier for everyone, not just Scalapay. The company will probably survive, but investors have not put fresh money in for over four years, which suggests they do not expect the stock to jump in value anytime soon.
Klarna signs major Italian merchants (e.g. fashion, travel) previously using Scalapay. Would show direct customer/merchant loss to Klarna in Scalapay's home market.
Scalapay conversion or GMV metrics after CCD2 takes effect (Nov 2026). Would show whether affordability checks erode its checkout advantage.
- Revenue ~$62M in 2024, up from ~$38M in 2023
- €70M EIB debt facility secured
- 11M+ users, 10,000+ partner brands
- EU Consumer Credit Directive II, effective Nov 20 2026, removes no-credit-check checkout model.
- No priced equity up-round since Feb 2022, raising down-round or distressed-sale risk.
- Klarna's AI-driven cost advantage, handling two thirds of chats via OpenAI as of 2024, pressures margins.
- Growing reliance on debt and securitization (BNP Paribas, EIB) increases leverage exposure.
- Conflicting third-party headcount estimates (111 to 218) suggest workforce instability or poor visibility.

- Is Scalapay profitable in 2026?
- Scalapay reportedly hit monthly breakeven in 2025 and analysts expect full year profitability in 2026, per a Sacra estimate, though this figure is not from audited filings and revenue was estimated at about $62M for 2024, up from $38M in 2023.
- Who owns Scalapay?
- Scalapay is privately held with no parent company. Investors include Tiger Global, Tencent, Willoughby Capital, Fasanara Capital, and Poste Italiane, following a $155M Series A in September 2021 and a $497M Series B in February 2022 that made it a unicorn.
- Is Scalapay a safe company to join right now?
- Scalapay holds a Bank of Italy license and serves over 11 million users as of December 2025, but it has not closed a priced equity round since February 2022 and faces EU Consumer Credit Directive II rules landing November 20, 2026 that remove its no-credit-check checkout model.
- Is Klarna a bigger threat to Scalapay than regulation?
- Both matter. Klarna IPO'd in September 2025 at roughly a 15 billion euro valuation with about 100 million users versus Scalapay's 11 million, and its OpenAI assistant handled two thirds of customer chats in its first month in 2024, doing work equal to about 700 agents.
- Could AI replace Scalapay's core business?
- Not the licensing or underwriting core. Scalapay's Bank of Italy payment license and bank/merchant integrations with Adyen, Stripe, and Deutsche Bank are hard to replicate with AI alone, but fraud screening and customer service, already outsourced to vendors like Trustfull since December 2024, are commoditizing fast.
- Has Scalapay raised new funding recently?
- Scalapay has not disclosed a new priced equity round since its February 2022 Series B. Instead it secured a BNP Paribas securitization deal for up to 3 billion euros in October 2024 and a 70 million euro EIB Scale-Up Debt facility in December 2025.
