Selectel
Russian cloud hosting and data center operator, leader in bare-metal server rental.
Selectel keeps growing revenue but its profit is shrinking under expensive debt while bigger, better-funded Russian clouds move faster on AI infrastructure.
Selectel rents computer servers and cloud services to businesses in Russia, and it is the third-largest player in that market. It is hard to compete against because it specializes in bare-metal servers (computers rented whole, not shared), which is a specific skill, but bigger rivals like Yandex Cloud and Sber's Cloud.ru have more money and are winning the fast-growing artificial intelligence business where customers need lots of computing power. The biggest risk is that Selectel borrowed money at very high interest rates (15%), and while its sales grew 39% last year, its actual profit fell 8% instead of rising, meaning the company is spending money faster than it makes it back.
Yandex Cloud or Cloud.ru announcing large GPU/AI capacity or major enterprise AI contracts. Would show domestic rivals capturing the AI growth segment ahead of Selectel.
Outcome of Selectel bond refinancing at 001P-07R series and future coupon rates. Higher refinancing costs would confirm its debt-funded model is under strain.
- FY2025 revenue up 39% to RUB 18.3bn
- FY2025 net profit down 8% to RUB 3.02bn
- Q1 2026 net profit fell 12.3% YoY
- Net profit compressing despite revenue growth (down 8% FY2025, down 12.3% Q1 2026 RAS).
- Reliance on 15% coupon bonds for funding amid high Russian interest rates.
- Potanin, a sanctioned individual, now holds 25% stake, raising sanctions-extension risk.
- US export controls restrict H100/H200/Blackwell GPU access, capping AI/GPU cloud scaling.
- Skipped fiscal 2025 dividends despite prior obligation, signaling cash pressure.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Yandex Cloud | losing to | Larger GPU/AI scale per Cloud4Y 2026 comparison; Selectel ranked 3rd in cloud share (2023) |
| Cloud.ru (Sber-backed) | losing to | Sber-backed rival cited as GPU/AI scale leader over Selectel, 2026 |
| AWS/Azure/Google Cloud | gaining on | Western hyperscalers hold only ~10.6% detected share in Russia due to sanctions, as of April 2026 |
| VK Cloud | contesting | Trails Selectel in website-tech detection share (2.6% vs 50.1%), April 2026 |
- Is Selectel profitable?
- Yes but margins are shrinking. FY2025 IFRS revenue hit RUB 18.3bn, up 39% YoY, yet net profit fell 8% to RUB 3.02bn. Q1 2026 RAS net profit dropped a further 12.3% YoY to RUB 544.9mn, showing continued margin compression despite strong top-line growth, as of February 2026.
- Who owns Selectel?
- Selectel is privately held. Solnechny Veter, an investment vehicle of ex-MegaFon CEO Gevork Vermishyan, held 34% as of May 2025. Sanctioned oligarch Vladimir Potanin's T-Technologies bought a 25% stake in December 2025 for roughly 16 billion rubles ($206 million). Founders Leviev and Mirilashvili retain a large stake via LVL1 Management.
- Will Selectel IPO?
- Not confirmed. CEO Oleg Lyubimov said in October 2024 there was no suitable market window for a public listing. Instead Selectel has funded growth through ruble bonds, raising its bond program ceiling from 30bn to 60bn rubles by mid-2026 at coupons around 15%, suggesting IPO plans remain shelved as of mid-2026.
- Could AI replace Selectel?
- Unlikely directly. Selectel provides physical data centers, FSTEC/FSB-licensed colocation, and bare-metal hosting in Russia, infrastructure AI cannot substitute. It has instead added GPU/AI cloud products (H100, H200 NVL, B300, ML Platform) as growth lines, though US export controls on advanced GPUs to Russia constrain its scaling versus larger rivals as of January 2026.
- Who is Selectel's biggest competitor?
- Yandex Cloud and Sber-backed Cloud.ru are Selectel's biggest domestic rivals, both larger and reportedly ahead in GPU/AI scale per a 2026 Cloud4Y comparison. iKS-Consulting ranked Selectel 3rd in Russian cloud market share (8.5%) in 2023, though it leads the bare-metal server rental niche with 56% share.
- How big is Selectel's headcount?
- Selectel had approximately 650 employees as of December 31, 2025, roughly flat versus 596 to 653 at end-2024 depending on source (AKM vs Revelio Labs). About 94% of staff are based in Russia, with small pockets in the US, Uzbekistan, and Thailand, per Revelio Labs data from June 2026.
