Sendbird
Sendbird sells chat and messaging APIs, now pivoting to AI customer-service agents.
Sendbird is racing to turn old chat customers into AI-agent buyers before Salesforce, Zendesk, and Microsoft do it for them, with no new funding round in five years to back the race.
Sendbird lets developers add messaging and customer support into apps. The problem is that big companies like Salesforce, Zendesk, and Microsoft already have AI customer-service agents built into their own products, and they are fighting hard to lock in customers. Sendbird's main advantage is that 4,000 apps already use its chat tool, which could theoretically help it sell AI agents to those customers, but there is no proof that this advantage actually works or that customers will switch from what they already have. The company will be in real trouble if it cannot get funding at a good price in late 2026 or early 2027, or if it cannot sign up major customers outside of Korea who actually use its new AI agent tool.
Sendbird names a specific enterprise (e.g. DoorDash, Match Group) publicly running its AI Agent product. Would show its embedded distribution is actually converting to AI-agent revenue.
Salesforce or Zendesk announces native agent feature wins among companies Sendbird lists as customers. Would show incumbents pulling through Sendbird's own customer base.
- $100M Series C at ~$1.05B valuation, last priced round
- Claims 300M+ monthly active users on its platform
- AI Agent for customer service launched
- No new priced funding round since April 2021 while AI-agent rivals raise at multi-billion valuations.
- Salesforce, Zendesk and Microsoft shipping native AI-agent features into platforms buyers already own.
- Frontier model agent frameworks commoditizing the AI-agent orchestration layer Sendbird is pivoting into.
- Revenue, customer count and headcount figures rely on unverified third-party estimates, not audited disclosure.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Salesforce (Agentforce) | losing to | Native AI agents shipped inside Service Cloud, competing directly with Sendbird's Feb 2025 pivot |
| Microsoft (Copilot Studio/Dynamics 365) | losing to | Autonomous agent teams added in 2025 release wave, announced 2025-07-16 |
| Sierra | gaining on | Raised $950M at $15.8B valuation, May 2026, dwarfing Sendbird's 2021 valuation |
| Decagon | gaining on | Reportedly raised large round at multi-billion valuation, January 2026 |
| Zendesk | contesting | Shipping native AI customer-service agent features into existing CX platform, 2026 |
| Intercom (Fin AI Agent) | contesting | Positioned as direct alternative in AI customer-service-agent comparisons, July 2026 |
- Is Sendbird profitable in 2026?
- No audited financials are public. Sendbird last raised a priced round in April 2021 (Series C, $100M at roughly $1.05-1.1B valuation) and has announced no new priced round since, with secondary-market estimators suggesting a steep valuation decline as of mid-2026, though that figure is a modeled estimate, not confirmed.
- Could AI replace Sendbird?
- Sendbird's original chat-API business risks commoditization as frontier-model agent frameworks (OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft Copilot Studio) absorb the orchestration layer. Sendbird itself pivoted to AI agents starting February 2025, launching Agent Steward in July 2026, betting it can own the CX-agent layer before rivals do.
- Is Sendbird losing to Salesforce or Zendesk?
- Salesforce shipped Agentforce natively inside Service Cloud and Microsoft added autonomous agent teams to Dynamics 365/Copilot Studio in its 2025 release wave (July 2025 announced, rolling out through March 2026), both competing directly with Sendbird's newer AI-agent products from a much larger distribution base.
- Who owns Sendbird and is it public?
- Sendbird is privately held, dual-headquartered in San Mateo, California and Seoul, South Korea, founded January 2013 by John S. Kim and co-founders. It has raised about $220.7M total, last priced at roughly $1.05-1.1B in an April 2021 Series C led by Steadfast Capital; it has not gone public.
- What is Sendbird's biggest competitor in AI customer service?
- Sendbird competes with Salesforce (Agentforce), Zendesk, Microsoft (Copilot Studio/Dynamics 365), and better-funded AI-agent pure-plays like Sierra, which raised $950M at a $15.8B valuation in May 2026, and Decagon, both dwarfing Sendbird's last confirmed $1.05-1.1B valuation from 2021.
- Has Sendbird raised new funding recently?
- No new priced funding round has been publicly reported since Sendbird's April 7, 2021 Series C, a $100M raise led by Steadfast Capital at roughly $1.05-1.1B valuation. As of July 2026, no fresh lead investor or terms have been announced despite an active multi-product AI pivot.
