The call

Sezzle is growing fast and printing profit, but it still depends on merchants like Shopify that are building their own competing BNPL tools.

Sezzle lets shoppers split purchases into four interest-free payments, and it makes real money doing it. The problem is that Shopify, which runs many online stores, has been pushing its own payment plan tool instead of Sezzle's, and Affirm has six times more stores using it. Anyone with the right licenses and data can offer payment plans, so there is no special trick that keeps competitors out. The one thing that could help Sezzle is if its new app features (letting people earn rewards or use Sezzle outside of checkout) catch on and bring in enough customers on their own, separate from store checkouts where Shopify controls what people see.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI mostly helps Sezzle price risk and catch fraud faster; no AI-native lender is taking its checkout share yet. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Shopify (in-house BNPL) and Affirm. Shopify pushes its own BNPL at checkout ahead of Sezzle, and Affirm's merchant network is roughly six times bigger. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. State lending licenses, an underwriting dataset built on thin-file borrowers, and fast-growing direct app usage outside merchant checkout.
What would change this call
Ruling or settlement in the Shopify antitrust case after the May 2026 order letting Sherman Act claims proceed. Shows whether Shopify's platform favoritism toward its own BNPL is legally curbed or reinforced.
Sezzle's Q2 2026 earnings (due ~August 6, 2026) merchant count and GMV growth versus prior quarters. Confirms or refutes the contested claim of merchant-count decline since 2021.
Filing of a formal securities class action tied to Hindenburg allegations within six months. Would indicate governance or disclosure problems beyond disputed short-seller claims.

Questions people ask
Is Sezzle profitable in 2026?
Yes. Sezzle posted Q1 2026 net income of $51.3 million (37.9% margin) and 52.5% adjusted EBITDA margin, per its May 6, 2026 earnings release. FY2025 net income was $133.1 million on $450.28 million revenue, up 66.1% YoY.
Who owns Sezzle?
Sezzle Inc. (Nasdaq: SEZL) is publicly traded and independent, founded 2016 by Charlie Youakim, Killian Brackey and Paul Paradis. As of May 6, 2026, insiders held roughly 49% of shares and institutions about 42%; market cap was near $5.8 billion in July 2026.
Is Affirm a bigger threat to Sezzle than Shopify?
Both matter differently: Affirm's merchant network is reported about 6x larger than Sezzle's roughly 47,000 stores (as of June 9, 2026), while Shopify actively favored its own in-house BNPL over Sezzle at checkout for four years, now the subject of active Sherman Act litigation (ruling May 13, 2026).
Could AI replace Sezzle's business model?
Underwriting, fraud detection and support are commoditizable by generic AI/ML used by larger rivals like PayPal and Affirm, and agentic checkout tools could embed BNPL natively. Sezzle's partial defense is its proprietary subprime lending dataset and state licensing, not a technological moat, per 2026 reporting.
Is Sezzle facing lawsuits in 2026?
Yes. A federal judge let Sezzle's Sherman Act antitrust claims against Shopify proceed on May 13, 2026, and multiple law firms (Pomerantz, Lowey Dannenberg, Bragar Eagel & Squire) announced securities-violation investigations starting May 14, 2026 after a board resignation and stock drop.
Why did Sezzle's stock drop in April 2026?
Board member Karen Webster resigned April 9, 2026 citing governance disputes, and Sezzle shares fell 13.6% to $59.71 on April 10, 2026. The event triggered subsequent law-firm investigations into potential securities-law violations announced in May 2026.
