The call

ShareChat pays its bills today but is staking its future on QuickTV, an unproven micro-drama app already tangled in four copyright suits.

ShareChat is an Indian app that lets people watch and share short videos in their local languages, and it actually makes a profit with about $105 million in yearly sales. But Facebook's Instagram Reels and Google's YouTube Shorts have grabbed 85 to 90 percent of the money that advertisers spend on short videos in India, while ShareChat and similar homegrown apps only get 5 to 10 percent. The company is betting everything on a new product called QuickTV that shows longer stories instead, but it is being sued four times for stealing content from other companies, and a rival service called JioHotstar is trying to do the same thing.

Why
01
AI pressure: Generative AI micro-drama production tools. AI video generation could let anyone flood QuickTV's micro-drama format with cheap clones, killing its only new bet before it scales. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Meta (Instagram Reels) and Google (YouTube Shorts). Reels and Shorts already take 85 to 90 percent of India's short video ad spend, leaving homegrown apps like Moj just 5 to 10 percent. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Operational profitability on ~$105M revenue and vernacular regional-language content Meta and Google underserve.
What would change this call
ShareChat files audited IPO prospectus targeting FY28 (~$400M raise). Would confirm or contradict claimed profitability and revenue growth with real audited numbers.
Delhi HC rulings in Zee Entertainment (9,400 claims), Story TV (4,500) and Kuku litigation against QuickTV. Adverse rulings or damages would threaten QuickTV's micro-drama content pipeline.
Homegrown short-video ad-share versus Reels and Shorts over next 2-3 quarters. Stabilization or growth would show ShareChat clawing back distribution share.
Key numbers
  • Revenue ~$105M, growing over 30% YoY (2026-07-01)
  • Last valuation $5B (2022), secondaries imply ~$2B (2024-03-01)
  • Homegrown apps hold only 5 to 10% of ad share (2026-07-01)
Named risks
  • Core MAU fell from 325-425M peak to ~150M by July 2026, eroding the network moat. Severity: high
  • Four active copyright suits (Zee, Story TV, Kuku, Dashverse) threaten damages or takedowns on QuickTV content. Severity: high
  • Reels and Shorts hold 85-90% of India's short-video ad spend, leaving a thin revenue base for homegrown apps. Severity: high
  • Five layoff rounds since 2020 signal recurring financial fragility despite profitability claims. Severity: medium
  • Conflicting self-reported financial, user and headcount figures reduce verifiability of profitability claims. Severity: medium
  • Indian Supreme Court obscenity scrutiny of OTT and micro-drama content could extend to QuickTV. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is ShareChat profitable in 2026?
Yes. ShareChat's CFO said the company reached operational profitability in Q1 FY27 (April to June 2026), with annual revenue crossing about 1,000 crore rupees (roughly 105 million dollars) and growing over 30% year on year, as reported July 1, 2026.
Who is ShareChat's biggest competitor?
Meta's Instagram Reels and Google's YouTube Shorts. As of March 2025, per Storyboard18, they together commanded 85 to 90 percent of India's short-video ad spend, leaving homegrown apps like ShareChat's Moj only 5 to 10 percent.
Is it safe to take a job at ShareChat?
Mixed. ShareChat says it turned operationally profitable in Q1 FY27 2026, but it has cut headcount from about 2,500 in 2020 to roughly 500 to 530 through at least five layoff rounds, the most recent a 5% cut in January 2025.
Could AI replace what ShareChat does?
ShareChat is using AI itself rather than being replaced: CTO Nitin Jain said in a July 2026 interview that AI and ML work cut server cost per user by about 85 percent, and its CFO expects an in-house generative AI content studio to add 5 to 7 margin points over two years.
Who owns ShareChat and is it public?
ShareChat is privately owned by Mohalla Tech Pvt Ltd, backed by Google, Temasek, Times Group, Lightspeed, Tiger Global and Tencent. Its last priced valuation was 5 billion dollars in May 2022; as of July 2026 it was targeting a 400 million dollar IPO around FY28.
What is QuickTV and is ShareChat facing lawsuits over it?
QuickTV is ShareChat's subscription micro-drama app launched in 2025, reaching about 3 million subscribers within three months. It faces four active copyright suits, including Zee Entertainment's case alleging 9,400 infringements, with jurisdiction upheld against Mohalla Tech in December 2025.
