Shionogi & Co.
147-year-old Japanese pharma making antiviral and antibiotic drugs, five years of record profit.
Shionogi's drugs and stakes are hard for anyone to copy quickly, but its ViiV royalty income now sits exposed to Gilead's HIV pipeline.
Shionogi makes and sells prescription medicines, especially for HIV, infections, and flu, and owns a piece of another HIV drug company called ViiV Healthcare that pays it money every year. It is hard to replace because its drugs have government approval and patent protection that last years, plus it has a contract with the US government for biodefense drugs and owns its own way to sell medicines in Japan. The biggest risk is that a competitor called Gilead is making HIV drugs that work longer and might take sales away from ViiV, which is where a lot of Shionogi's money comes from right now.
Shionogi FY2026 results (due late July/Aug 2026) versus ¥700bn guidance. Would show whether Torii/JT integration is delivering promised growth.
Torii Pharmaceutical absorption-type merger completion on April 1, 2027. Would confirm successful integration versus disruption to Shionogi's Japan distribution.
- FY2025 revenue ¥499.7bn, up 14% year over year
- ViiV Healthcare stake raised to 21.7% for $2.125bn
- BARDA biodefense contract worth up to $482M
- HIV royalty concentration via 21.7% ViiV stake exposed to Gilead's lenacapavir gaining share.
- Execution risk integrating Torii Pharmaceutical and JT's pharma business ahead of April 2027 full merger.
- Patent expiry on cefiderocol and ensitrelvir expected 2029-2031, threatening future revenue base.
- FY2026 ¥700bn revenue forecast depends on full-year consolidation gains; a miss would be a negative earnings surprise.
