The call

Sift has the data and customer base of a category leader, but slow growth and processor bundling show the ground shifting under it.

Sift helps online stores and payment processors spot and stop fraudulent transactions by learning patterns from trillions of past events across thousands of websites. The company built something real: a huge collection of fraud data that is hard for others to copy, and its software locks customers in through deep workflow integration. But Stripe, Adyen, PayPal, and Cybersource have already built their own fraud-spotting tools directly into their products, and those bundles are quietly stealing Sift's customers, especially mid-market sellers who find it simpler to use one vendor instead of two. The company's growth has slowed to 15 percent per year, its stock has fallen 70 percent since 2021, and it is laying off staff, all signs it is losing the race rather than winning it. The one thing that could change the picture: whether Sift can pivot into detecting and preventing fraud in the new world of AI-powered shopping agents, or whether the next round of funding forces a down-round that confirms the market has already made up its mind.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI is Sift's own tool for scoring fraud, not yet a separate product replacing Sift outright. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Stripe Radar, Adyen, Cybersource, Equifax's Kount. Payment processors now bundle fraud scoring into checkout for free, pulling mid-market merchants away from standalone tools like Sift. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Cross-merchant data from 1 trillion+ events a year gives Sift pattern-matching that a single processor's own data can't match.
What would change this call
Sift's next financing round prices at or near the ~70% secondary-market markdown. Confirms investors see materially reduced value versus the 2021 Series E.
A named Sift enterprise customer (e.g. Hertz, Yelp, Poshmark) switches to Stripe Radar or Adyen fraud tools. Direct evidence processor bundling is displacing Sift among marquee accounts.
Sift reports another round of layoffs within the next 12 months. Signals continued cost-cutting rather than growth reacceleration.

Questions people ask
Is Sift profitable in 2026?
No public profitability data exists. Sift is privately held with estimated 2025 revenue of about 35 million dollars, up from about 30.3 million in 2024, roughly 15 percent YoY growth per Latka, December 21, 2025. No profit figures are disclosed.
Has Sift had layoffs?
Yes. TrueUp documents an 11 percent layoff of about 41 people around July 2022, and headcount has kept shrinking since, with a Glassdoor review from August 15, 2024 citing layoffs and teams stretched too thin.
Could AI replace Sift?
Not entirely. Sift's product is itself ML based fraud scoring, but its 1 trillion plus annual events across 34,000 plus sites and deep processor integrations create a data and workflow moat that generic AI tools cannot easily replicate, per sift.com, April 7, 2026.
Who is Sift's biggest competitor?
Named direct rivals include Signifyd, Riskified, Forter, Kount (Equifax), SEON, and Featurespace, per Shufti Pro, June 24, 2026. Payment giants Stripe (Radar), Adyen, PayPal/Braintree, and Cybersource are also encroaching by bundling native fraud tools.
Who owns Sift?
Sift is privately held and venture backed, with no IPO or acquisition on record as of January 1, 2024 per Forge Global. Its last priced round was a 50 million dollar Series E in April 2021 valuing it above 1 billion dollars.
What is Sift's current valuation?
Sift was last priced above 1 billion dollars in its April 2021 Series E round. TrueUp's secondary market tracking as of June 30, 2026 estimates a valuation roughly 70 percent below that, implying about 0.3 billion dollars.
