The call

Sigma runs a headcount-billed model in a market where AI agents already do the work it charges for, with regulated collections as its main uncontested ground.

Sigma Connected hires people to handle customer phone calls and emails for banks, debt collectors, and other companies. The problem is that AI chatbots and voice systems from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic can now do much of this work cheaper and faster, and big competitors like Teleperformance already have the scale to copy Sigma's approach. Sigma does have some protection in handling regulated complaints work for financial regulators, but that is only a small part of its business. The real test is whether its customer count shrinks faster than it can grow that protected work, and the company reported losing 11 to 12 percent of its staff in 2025 even while claiming to be hiring, which is a red flag that AI is already eating into the jobs it sells.

Why
01
AI pressure: Sierra, Decagon, Parloa, Cresta, and client in-house builds on Claude/OpenAI models. These AI agents already handle FAQ, triage, and first-line service, the per-seat work Sigma bills clients for by the hour. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Teleperformance, Concentrix, TTEC, Foundever, Majorel. Bigger global BPOs can copy Sigma's regulated-collections niche and are building their own AI-agent platforms for the same work. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. FCA authorisation for collections and vulnerable-customer handling, work regulators still expect a human-accountable provider to own.
What would change this call
Sigma reports 2026 headcount via Revelio or similar third-party data. Shows whether the double-digit YoY decline continues, reverses, or is confirmed as AI-driven seat loss.
Sigma ServiceOne moves from pilot to disclosed commercial rollout with outcome-based pricing. Would show Sigma building a real AI moat instead of just losing seats to automation.
Concentrix, Teleperformance, or another large BPO launches an FCA-authorised AI agent for regulated collections. Would show Sigma's regulatory niche is being copied, removing its main defensible edge.
Key numbers
  • Headcount ~2,165 as of Dec 2025, down 11.6% YoY (2026-06-29)
  • About 75% of staff based in South Africa (2026-06-29)
  • Named Major Contender in Everest Group PEAK Matrix 2024 (2025-10-20)
Named risks
  • Headcount fell 11.6% YoY in 2025 per third-party data, consistent with AI-driven seat compression. Severity: high
  • No proprietary AI platform disclosed, core stack is third-party (Zendesk, Freshworks, Guru) as of Aug 2025. Severity: high
  • Large global BPOs (Teleperformance, Concentrix, TTEC) can replicate regulated niche with no structural block. Severity: high
  • Company revenue and headcount figures contradict independent data, raising transparency concerns. Severity: medium
  • Motor finance FCA redress scheme timing (mid-2026 consultation) could swing complaint volumes either way. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Sigma Connected profitable?
No audited revenue figures are public. The company cites a historical '£60m turnover' milestone (undated, company claim), while data aggregator Growjo estimates ~$15M in current annual revenue, an implausible mismatch for a 2,000+ employee BPO. No confirmed 2024-2026 profitability data exists.
How many employees does Sigma Connected actually have?
Conflicting figures: Sigma's own careers page claimed growth to 'over 5,000 people' as of August 2025, but workforce-data firm Revelio Labs put worldwide headcount at ~2,165 as of December 2025, down 11.6% year-over-year from a 2024 peak of 2,512.
Could AI replace Sigma Connected's services?
Much of its work (first-line service, FAQ, triage, knowledge lookup) overlaps directly with AI-agent vendors like Sierra and Decagon. Sigma has no proprietary AI platform as of August 2025, running on third-party tools (Zendesk, Freshworks, Guru), leaving most billable seats exposed.
Who owns Sigma Connected?
Sigma Connected is privately held and has been described as 'a Digicall Group company' since a 2016 acquisition/partnership with the South Africa-founded Digicall Group. PitchBook separately lists it as an 'Acquired/Merged (Operating Subsidiary)' with a 'Formerly PE-Backed' financing status.
Who is Sigma Connected's biggest competitor?
Large global BPOs including Teleperformance, Concentrix, TTEC, Foundever and Majorel operate in the same regulated customer-contact space with no structural barrier to replicating Sigma's niche. CB Insights also names Mplus and Direct Response as direct comparables as of August 2025.
Is it safe to take a job at Sigma Connected?
Third-party data shows headcount fell 11.6% year-over-year in 2025 to roughly 2,165 employees per Revelio Labs (December 2025), even as the company publicly claimed growth to over 5,000 people in August 2025, an unresolved discrepancy worth scrutinizing before joining.
