The call

Revenue, cash, and headcount are all shrinking at the same time that free AI tools and better funded rivals are pulling at the same customers.

Simplilearn teaches job skills through videos and courses online, competing with Coursera, LinkedIn Learning, and upGrad. It is easy for students to switch to these larger rivals or free AI tools like ChatGPT that can now answer questions and teach topics instantly, which is why Simplilearn's self-paced course business shrank 26% last year. The company could survive only if its business-to-business division (selling training to large companies) starts growing faster than the consumer side keeps shrinking, otherwise it becomes just another commodity that students abandon.

Why
01
AI pressure: Free AI tutors like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Free AI tutoring is commodifying self-paced video courses, the segment collapse already shows up in FY25 revenue. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Coursera, LinkedIn Learning (Microsoft), and India rival upGrad. upGrad grew 5% in FY25 while Simplilearn revenue fell 26%, suggesting the problem is company specific, not just sector wide. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Enterprise B2B contracts and university-branded programs, if they grow, could offer something free AI tools cannot replicate.

Simplilearn's FY26 (ending March 2026) revenue and segment mix are published. Shows whether self-paced decline continues or the company stabilizes via enterprise B2B.
Simplilearn files for IPO before or around March 2026 as previously targeted. Would show Blackstone sees a viable exit rather than continuing to hold a shrinking asset.
upGrad publishes FY26 revenue and growth rate versus Simplilearn's FY26 figures. Direct India-peer comparison showing whether Simplilearn keeps losing share to upGrad.

Questions people ask
Is Simplilearn profitable in 2026?
No. Simplilearn's FY25 (ended March 2025) revenue fell 26% to ₹556 crore (~$65-67M) from ₹750 crore in FY24, and while losses narrowed via cost cuts, the company missed its own ₹950 crore full-year-profitability guidance, per Entrackr, January 19 2026.
Did Simplilearn have layoffs?
Yes. Simplilearn cut about 200 employees in December 2023 citing performance issues, and headcount fell from a 2023 peak of 3,497 to 2,748 by December 2025, a 21.4% decline, per Revelio Labs workforce data dated June 29 2026.
Who owns Simplilearn?
Blackstone acquired a majority stake in Simplilearn for $250 million in July 2021, per TechCrunch. GSV Ventures also holds a board seat after leading a $45M round in November 2022 at a roughly $600-610M valuation.
Could AI replace Simplilearn's courses?
Partly already happening. Simplilearn's FY25 revenue drop of 26% (to ₹556 crore) was driven by collapse of its self-paced/self-learning segment, the exact content type most exposed to free AI tutoring tools like ChatGPT and Claude, per Entrackr, January 19 2026.
Is Simplilearn going public soon?
Management targeted an IPO by end of FY26 (around March 2026) per Financial Express, October 31 2024, but as of mid-2026 no listing or filing has been confirmed in public reporting, indicating the timeline has slipped.
How does Simplilearn compare to upGrad?
upGrad is outperforming. upGrad's FY25 operating revenue grew 5% to ₹1,569 crore and its net loss halved to ₹274 crore, while Simplilearn's FY25 revenue fell 26% to ₹556 crore, per Economic Times, June 5 2026.
