The call

Skechers still sells what people want at a price Nike and Adidas won't touch, but it's now a private company run by a cost-cutting owner with tariff and debt pressure building underneath it.

Skechers makes comfortable, affordable shoes and sells them through its own stores and other retailers worldwide. Nike and Adidas mostly stay out of Skechers' price range because their brand names carry a cost that customers in the value segment won't pay, making Skechers hard to directly copy, though Nike and Adidas are pushing harder into the performance-shoe category where Skechers is now competing. The big wildcard is whether the company's new owner, 3G Capital, will cut costs smartly by trimming back-office jobs and store overhead, or whether it will cut deeper into product quality and marketing in ways that actually damage the brand and lose customers to rivals.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI doesn't design shoes people want to wear; the risk is Skechers using AI ads badly and annoying its own customers. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Nike, Adidas. Nike and Adidas mostly ignore the value-comfort tier as beneath their brand, but Skechers is now pushing into performance running, where they compete directly. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Wholesale scale, comfort-tech reputation (Arch Fit, Slip-ins), and a price tier Nike and Adidas avoid touching.
What would change this call
3G Capital cuts product R&D, materials quality, or brand marketing budgets over the next 12-18 months. Would show the moat-eroding Kraft Heinz style squeeze rather than growth investment.
Delaware Chancery ruling on the buyout price litigation lands within the expected window. Would clarify whether minority shareholders were shortchanged in the take-private deal.
Court of International Trade rules on the tariff litigation and Skechers reports post-ruling gross margin. Would show whether tariff costs keep compressing margins under the leveraged structure.

Questions people ask
Is Skechers still publicly traded in 2026?
No. Skechers delisted from the NYSE after 3G Capital completed a $9.4 billion take-private acquisition on September 12, 2025. Founder Robert Greenberg remains Chairman/CEO, and the company no longer files public quarterly earnings.
Who owns Skechers now?
3G Capital, the private equity firm behind Kraft Heinz and Anheuser-Busch InBev, acquired Skechers for $9.4 billion, closing September 12, 2025. The Greenberg family, holding roughly 60% voting power, approved the deal without a broad shareholder vote.
Is Skechers profitable?
Skechers' last public results, Q2 2025 ended June 30, showed record sales of $2.44 billion (up 13.1% YoY), but operating margin fell to 7.1% from 9.6% and gross margin compressed to 53.3%, down 160 basis points, due to tariff costs.
Could AI replace Skechers' marketing team?
Skechers shifted global media buying to Horizon Media's AI-powered BluConverged platform, announced July 16, 2026, and ran AI-generated ad campaigns starting 2025 that drew public backlash for quality, per design press reporting in May 2026.
Is Skechers' buyout price being challenged in court?
Yes. Delaware Chancery Court has two active suits as of July 2026: an appraisal action covering about 60 investment pools worth roughly $1.3 billion (including Elliott Management's ~$400M stake) and a separate fiduciary-duty class action against Greenberg family management.
Who is Skechers' biggest competitor?
Nike and Adidas dominate globally, with Skechers ranked the world's third-largest footwear company by sales as of January 2025. Its new performance-running push also pits it against On Running, which grew roughly four times faster than Hoka in late 2025.
