The call

SmartRecruiters now runs inside SAP's orbit, safe from independent collapse but exposed to how SAP folds it into SuccessFactors over the next few years.

SmartRecruiters helps large companies find and hire people. It is somewhat hard to replace because it stores millions of candidate records and works deeply inside companies' existing hiring systems, especially now that SAP owns it and can bundle SmartRecruiters with SAP's payroll software. However, Workday and Greenhouse are strong rivals offering similar tools, and Workday just teamed up with Paradox (a company that uses AI chatbots for hiring) in October 2025. The biggest unknown is whether SAP will lay off SmartRecruiters employees or merge its marketing and sales teams over the next two to three years, which could hurt product quality or customer loyalty.

Why
01
AI pressure: Eightfold AI and agentic hiring tools from Workday plus Paradox. AI agents could automate sourcing and screening SmartRecruiters bills for, so it built its own agent, Winston, to keep pace. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Workday (with Paradox) and SAP's own SuccessFactors roadmap. Workday and Paradox shipped a rival agentic hiring stack in Oct 2025, while SAP could fold SmartRecruiters into SuccessFactors and blur its identity. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Guaranteed SAP SuccessFactors distribution plus deep workflow lock-in across 4,000+ enterprise customers and 140M+ candidate records.
What would change this call
SAP announces SmartRecruiters-specific layoffs or role consolidation in G&A, marketing, or engineering. Would show SAP is absorbing rather than preserving SmartRecruiters as standalone unit.
SmartRecruiters customers migrate to SuccessFactors-native tools or report migration delays. Would indicate integration friction and customer attrition risk.
Next Gartner Magic Quadrant for hiring/ATS (after May 2026) shifts SmartRecruiters ranking versus Greenhouse or Workday+Paradox. Would show independent analyst view of competitive standing changing.

Questions people ask
Is SmartRecruiters still an independent company?
No. SAP SE completed its acquisition of SmartRecruiters on September 11, 2025, making it a wholly owned SAP subsidiary. It continues to be marketed and sold as a standalone product but is no longer independently investable or owned by its VC backers.
Is SmartRecruiters profitable?
No public profitability figures exist. Reporting tied to the August 2025 SAP deal cited SmartRecruiters revenue of approximately $71 million for the prior year, with 'exceptional three-year revenue growth,' but no net income or margin data has been disclosed.
Could AI replace what SmartRecruiters' platform does for recruiters?
SmartRecruiters' own Winston AI agent, launched June 10, 2025, already automates resume screening and scheduling, with the company claiming a 75% reduction in time-to-screen and 90% reduction in time-to-schedule, showing these tasks are being automated by the vendor itself.
Who is SmartRecruiters' biggest competitor?
Greenhouse leads G2's Spring/Winter 2026 rankings with a 98% satisfaction score across Overall, Enterprise, Mid-Market and EMEA segments as of June 25, 2026, while Workday strengthened its AI recruiting via its October 2025 acquisition of Paradox.
Who owns SmartRecruiters now?
SAP SE has owned SmartRecruiters as a wholly owned subsidiary since the deal closed on September 11, 2025, after acquiring it to enhance SAP SuccessFactors with AI-powered recruiting differentiation.
Will SmartRecruiters have layoffs because of the SAP acquisition?
No layoffs specific to SmartRecruiters have been confirmed as of July 2026, but analysts flag months 12-36 post-acquisition (through roughly 2027) as the highest-risk window for consolidation of overlapping G&A, marketing, and engineering roles typical in SAP integrations.
