Sourcegraph
Sourcegraph builds enterprise code search and, now, a retrieval layer for AI coding agents.
Sourcegraph shed its founders, its consumer product, and most of its valuation while betting a new intelligence layer for agents can hold the regulated enterprise line.
Sourcegraph sells a tool that lets large regulated companies search their code across multiple computers and data centers at once, which most simpler tools cannot do. Right now it is hard for rivals to copy because GitHub cannot stay neutral when competing against Sourcegraph, and newer AI coding tools like Cursor have not yet figured out how to work safely in strict company environments where data cannot leave the building. The real question is whether Cursor or similar tools ship the same multi-computer, locked-down search ability in the next year, because if they do, Sourcegraph loses its last real advantage.
Cursor or Claude Code ships air-gapped, multi-host enterprise code retrieval. Would show Sourcegraph's compliance-driven moat collapsing.
Sourcegraph reports enterprise customers routing agent retrieval through its MCP/Deep Search layer. Would show the 'intelligence layer for agents' pivot gaining real traction.
- Valuation cut from $2.6B (2021) to ~$0.4B secondary est.
- Headcount fell from 209 to as low as 130-147
- Cursor now at ~$50B valuation, ~$2B ARR
- No priced funding round since 2021 plus ~85% secondary valuation markdown estimate as of mid-2026.
- Founders Quinn Slack and Beyang Liu departed with Amp spinoff in December 2025.
- Cody discontinued for non-enterprise users July 2025, unproven pivot to Deep Search/MCP as replacement.
- Recurring layoffs described as common occurrence per December 2025 Glassdoor reviews.
- Cursor and Claude Code moving upmarket into enterprise, threatening Sourcegraph's core compliance moat.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Cursor | gaining on | ~$50B valuation, ~$2B ARR, 1M+ customers, moving into enterprise as of June 2026 |
| Claude Code | gaining on | Performs dynamic codebase exploration without pre-built indexes, undercutting Sourcegraph's core model, 2026 |
| Cline | gaining on | Open-source agent eating single-repo/small-team code search share, cited June 2026 |
| GitHub (Microsoft) | contesting | Structurally limited to GitHub-hosted repos but a channel-conflict threat to cross-host search |
| Amp, Inc. | contesting | Spun out of Sourcegraph Dec 1, 2025 taking founders and the flagship agent product with it |
- Is Sourcegraph profitable in 2026?
- Profitability is not disclosed. Estimated revenue grew from ~$10M (2021) to ~$50M (est. March 2025), but no priced funding round has occurred since 2021, and a secondary-market tracker put its June 2026 valuation at ~$0.4B, an ~85% markdown from its 2021 $2.6B peak.
- Did Sourcegraph have layoffs?
- Yes. Glassdoor reviews as of December 6, 2025 describe layoffs as 'a common occurrence' over the prior year. Headcount estimates fell from ~209 (March 2025) to ~184 (November 2025) and as low as ~130-147 in a more recent tracker.
- Who owns Sourcegraph now?
- Sourcegraph remains privately held and VC-backed. In December 2025 it split from its coding-agent unit Amp, Inc.; co-founders Quinn Slack and Beyang Liu left to run Amp, while former CFO Dan Adler became Sourcegraph's new CEO.
- Could Cursor or Claude Code replace Sourcegraph?
- They already replaced part of it: Cody's free, pro, and enterprise-starter tiers were discontinued July 23, 2025. Cursor reported ~$2B ARR and a ~$50B valuation as of June 2026 and is moving upmarket into enterprise, directly pressuring Sourcegraph's remaining niche.
- Is Sourcegraph a safe company to join in 2026?
- Mixed signals. Glassdoor (Dec 2025) shows a 3.2/5 rating and 100% CEO approval, but also notes recurring layoffs over the past year, a December 2025 corporate split, and no new funding round since 2021.
- What happened to Sourcegraph's Amp product?
- Amp, Sourcegraph's frontier coding-agent bet launched in 2025, was spun out as an independent company, Amp Inc., in December 2025. Founders Quinn Slack and Beyang Liu left Sourcegraph to lead it; Sourcegraph no longer manages or supports Amp.
