The call

Speak has real scale and a strong home base in Korea, but its main conversational feature runs on the same AI everyone else can rent, and Duolingo already ships a similar tool.

Speak teaches languages through AI conversation practice and has real traction in South Korea, where it is the top education app. But it faces two serious threats: Duolingo, which is seven times larger and already adding AI conversation features to its app, and free tools like ChatGPT Voice that let anyone practice conversation without paying. Speak's brand strength in Korea and its curriculum are real advantages, but neither is hard to copy, and if Duolingo accelerates its AI features or if free AI conversation tools get better, Speak's reason to exist shrinks fast.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT Voice and Gemini Live. Free voice AI from ChatGPT and Gemini Live can hold a spoken English conversation too, built on the same OpenAI tech Speak rents. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Duolingo. Duolingo, seven times Speak's revenue, now ships its own AI chatbot Lily and AI video sessions that copy Speak's core feature. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep brand dominance in Korea plus a growing base of roughly 500 enterprise customers that took real time to build.
What would change this call
Duolingo reports AI feature engagement or ARPU lift in a 2026 quarterly earnings call. Would show the larger incumbent's copied features are working, narrowing Speak's window.
Speak for Business enterprise customer count surpasses 1,000 orgs with seat expansion data. Would show enterprise lock-in strengthening beyond current ~500 orgs.
Speak announces a Series D or IPO filing within the next two quarters. Would confirm growth momentum is translating into new capital validation.

Questions people ask
Is Speak profitable in 2026?
No profitability figures are publicly disclosed. Speak is private and reported crossing $100 million in annualized revenue by November 2025 (vendor claimed, via Forbes reporting cited by Benzinga on 2025-11-20), but no profit margin or net income data has been released.
Who owns Speak, the language learning app?
Speak is independent and venture backed, not owned by a parent company. Its Series C closed December 10, 2024: $78 million at a $1 billion valuation, led by Accel with OpenAI Startup Fund, Khosla Ventures, and Y Combinator participating.
Could AI replace Speak's core product?
Speak's conversational practice runs on OpenAI's Realtime API, the same foundation powering free ChatGPT Voice and Gemini Live, so the core feature is commoditizing. Speak's late-2024 'Live Roleplays' launch used this same rented API, per TechCrunch, December 10, 2024.
Who is Speak's biggest competitor?
Duolingo (NASDAQ: DUOL) is Speak's biggest threat: it reported about $724 million in 2024 revenue versus Speak's $100 million ARR (as of November 2025) and has already shipped an AI chatbot called 'Lily' that directly rivals Speak's conversation practice.
How much funding has Speak raised total?
Speak has raised roughly $160 to $166 million across rounds from 2017 accelerator funding through its December 2024 Series C, which alone brought in $78 million at a $1 billion valuation, backed by OpenAI Startup Fund, Accel, and Khosla Ventures.
Does Speak mainly operate in South Korea?
Yes. As of August 2023 reporting, Speak had helped teach English to nearly 6% of South Korea's population (about 3 million people) and was the #1 top-grossing English learning app on Korea's App Store; leadership called Korea its 'launchpad' in a July 23, 2026 Korea Times interview.
