The call

Speexx survives on regulated European accounts it already has, while a much bigger, better-funded Babbel and free AI tutors squeeze the language-drilling core it built its name on.

Speexx is a language-training platform that teaches employees at big European companies how to speak English and other languages, making about $80 million a year. The company has real advantages: European companies trust it because it follows tough privacy rules like GDPR and stores data in Germany, plus it plugs into their hiring systems. But those advantages are under attack. Babbel, a much bigger language company, is now selling to businesses with AI features built in, and newer AI-only rivals like SpeakX are making basic language drills cheap and easy to copy. The one thing that could save Speexx is if its locked-in enterprise customers stay loyal because of their compliance needs and integrations, even as the basic language-teaching part becomes a commodity that AI can do just as well.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT, Duolingo Max, SpeakX. Generic AI tutors do conversational drilling for free or cheap, hollowing out the low end of what Speexx sells. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Babbel (with EF Corporate Solutions and Berlitz behind it). Babbel makes over $270M a year and is pushing AI features into B2B, aiming straight at Speexx's enterprise base. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. German data residency, GDPR compliance, and deep HRIS integrations lock in regulated European employers like VW, Merck, and Bosch.
What would change this call
Babbel announces 2-3 named DACH enterprise clients with GDPR-compliant AI product within 12 months. Would show Babbel converting Speexx's regulated-market moat, not just marketing.
Speexx discloses a funding round, M&A, or audited financials in 2025-2026. Would clarify its murky governance and financial health, or confirm continued opacity.
Fosway 9-Grid 2027 or G2 Fall 2026 report shifts Speexx's ranking versus Babbel for Business. Independent analyst view on whether Speexx is losing enterprise standing.

Questions people ask
Is Speexx profitable?
Profitability is not disclosed. Speexx is privately held with estimated 2024 revenue around 79.7M dollars ARR per Latka (2024-12-18), up from about 54.8M dollars in 2023, but no public profit or loss figures have been released as of mid-2026.
Who owns Speexx?
Speexx is privately held and venture backed, with investors including Alto Invest and Ventech. Total disclosed funding is small, roughly 5 to 11 million dollars across three rounds, including a 5.86M dollar Series B closed 2020-10-30 backed by Ventech.
Could AI replace Speexx?
AI threatens Speexx's core language drilling workflow, the segment most exposed to generic LLM tutors like ChatGPT and funded AI-native rivals such as SpeakX, which raised 16M dollars in October 2025. Speexx's enterprise HRIS integrations and GDPR compliance offer partial insulation, not full protection.
Who is Speexx's biggest competitor?
Babbel for Business is the largest scale threat, with 2024 revenue exceeding 270 million dollars and over 16 million subscriptions by early 2025 per third party analysis, dwarfing Speexx and pushing aggressively into enterprise B2B.
Has Speexx launched AI products?
Yes. Speexx launched Speexx Talk, an AI conversational practice tool recognized by World Future Awards on 2025-07-30, and Speexx AI Coaching on 2025-11-12, which the company says runs on Speexx-owned German servers with no third-party AI integration.
What compliance certifications does Speexx hold?
Speexx states it holds ISO 27001, TISAX, AZAV, SOC 2 Type II, CyberVadis Gold, and GDPR/CCPA compliance, cited in its 2025-11-12 AI Coaching launch announcement, positioned as differentiators for regulated European enterprise buyers.
