The call

Spendesk turned profitable but stalled, sitting on a frozen valuation while a better-funded Ramp pushes hard into its home turf.

Spendesk helps companies manage employee spending and business cards across Europe. It has real advantages that are hard to copy: a government license to issue payments in France, deep connections to European accounting software, and customers who have built their spending workflows around it. However, growth has nearly stopped at 4% per year, while Ramp, a better-funded US competitor, is now marketing directly to Spendesk customers in Europe as a reason to switch. The company is probably worth less than its $1.1 billion price tag from 2022. The one thing that could change this is if Spendesk's new AI tools (launching mid-2026) prove so useful that customers stay loyal, or if a larger bank or software company buys it.

Why
01
AI pressure: Ramp's AI-driven expense automation and agentic finance tools. Ramp sells AI-powered speed and US scale; Spendesk's own AI Connect (MCP) launches June 2026 to try to keep pace. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Ramp. US-based Ramp is flush with capital and running direct 'upgrade from Spendesk' campaigns to grab European logos. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Its own ACPR-licensed payment institution plus Visa issuing deal locks in regulatory trust and workflow depth competitors can't copy overnight.
What would change this call
Spendesk announces an up-round, down-round, or acquisition within 12 months. Would show whether investors still value the frozen $1.1B mark or see it as underwater.
Ramp publicly announces European enterprise logo wins or a France/Germany office expansion. Would confirm Ramp is converting marketing into actual Spendesk customer losses.
Spendesk's next reported ARR figure versus its own ~€60M end-2025 target. Would show whether growth reaccelerated past 4% or stayed stalled.

Questions people ask
Is Spendesk profitable in 2026?
Yes. Spendesk reached profitability in Q1 2025 and calls itself the first profitable European spend-management platform, per its June 25, 2025 press release. ARR was around 50-52 million dollars by early 2025, with a company target of 60 million euros ARR by end of 2025.
Has Spendesk had layoffs?
Yes. Headcount peaked at about 590 employees in February 2023, fell to about 459 by October 2024, and dropped further to roughly 300-327 by mid-2026. Sifted reported a 2024 layoff affecting about 150 employees tied to a business slowdown and CEO change.
Who is Spendesk's biggest competitor?
Ramp, the US-based fintech, is Spendesk's most aggressive rival, running Europe-targeted comparison marketing positioning itself as an upgrade from Spendesk as of June 30, 2026. European peers include Pleo, Payhawk, Soldo, and Moss.
Could AI replace Spendesk?
Core tasks like receipt OCR and expense categorization are commoditizing, but Spendesk holds a regulated ACPR payment institution license (#17518, launched November 2024) and Visa principal-issuer status that a pure AI tool cannot replicate, plus it launched its own MCP-based AI Connect in June 2026.
Who owns Spendesk?
Spendesk is privately held, backed by investors including Index Ventures, General Atlantic, Tiger Global, and Eight Roads Ventures. Its last funding round was a Series C extension of 113 million dollars in January 2022 led by Tiger Global, valuing it above 1.1 billion dollars.
Is Spendesk growing fast in 2026?
Growth has slowed sharply. Third-party tracker Latka reported year-over-year growth of only about 4% as of July 2, 2026, well below the company's own stated target of double-digit growth and 60 million euros ARR by end of 2025.
