The call

Sponge sits on standardized rails it does not own, competing against a former employer that already shipped the same capability at far greater scale.

Sponge builds software that lets companies accept payments through AI helpers and automated systems. The problem is that giants like Stripe, Coinbase, Visa, and Google have already created competing products and can reach customers far more easily because they own the payment networks and have huge existing customer bases. What matters most: which company wins the race to set the standard for how these AI payment systems talk to each other. If Stripe or Google wins that race by early 2027, they will have such a built-in advantage that Sponge would struggle to compete, even with a talented team.

Why
01
AI pressure: Anthropic MCP and OpenAI Agentic Commerce Protocol. If MCP or ACP becomes the owned standard for agent payments, giants native to that standard route around Sponge entirely. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Stripe. Stripe, the founders' former employer, already ships Machine Payments Protocol and announced 288 agent-commerce products at Sessions 2026. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Founders' Stripe Crypto background and an early MCP-native wallet give a head start, but nothing yet locks in suppliers or agent buyers.
What would change this call
Which protocol (Stripe MPP, x402, or UCP) becomes dominant by Q1 2027. Shows whether Sponge sits on a losing standard with no distribution path.
Sponge discloses a named enterprise customer with transaction volume. Would show real catalog lock-in beyond vendor claims.
Sponge announces a Series A or Seed round with a lead investor. Would show it secured capital before consolidation closes its window.

Questions people ask
Is Sponge profitable in 2026?
No. Sponge is a pre-revenue, 3-person YC W26 startup with no disclosed revenue, customers, or enterprise logos as of July 14, 2026. A third-party tracker reports only about $500K raised in early-stage VC as of July 7, 2026, unconfirmed by any primary source.
Could Stripe replace Sponge's agent payments product?
Very plausibly. Stripe, the founders' ex-employer, shipped 288 agent-commerce product launches including agent wallets and single-use cards at Stripe Sessions 2026 on April 29-30, 2026, directly overlapping Sponge's Wallet and Gateway products with far greater distribution.
Who founded Sponge and when?
Sponge was founded in 2026 by three ex-Stripe Crypto engineers, Rishab Luthra, Jae Choi, and Eric Zhang, who reportedly shipped Stripe's stablecoin payments and fiat-to-crypto onramp. It is part of Y Combinator's Winter 2026 (W26) batch, per YC's company page.
Who is Sponge's biggest competitor?
Stripe is the largest threat, having launched 288 agent-commerce products at Sessions 2026 (April 29-30, 2026) and its own Machine Payments Protocol on March 18, 2026. Direct startup peers Skyfire (raised $9.5M since 2023) and Locus (YC F25) compete with nearly identical wallet and catalog positioning.
Does Sponge hold its own banking or card license?
No. The Sponge card is a Visa card issued by Rain, a Visa Principal Member, collateralized by digital assets. Sponge resells this license rather than holding its own regulated card-issuing license, per paysponge.com product details as of 2026.
How much money has Sponge raised?
A third-party tracker, StartupHub.ai, reports Sponge raised approximately $500K in early-stage VC as of July 7, 2026. No primary source, priced valuation, or named lead investor has been confirmed publicly for this YC W26 company.
