The call

Bolt.new proved the category exists but has sat at $40M ARR for over a year while Lovable and Replit sprinted past it on the same idea.

StackBlitz makes Bolt.new, an AI tool that writes working code and web apps in your browser. The company grew incredibly fast in late 2024 but then stopped growing while a competitor called Lovable pulled way ahead (10 times bigger). Right now, StackBlitz charges based on how many AI tokens customers use, which means it makes less money when AI models get cheaper or better, and bigger companies like Microsoft or OpenAI could build the same thing into their own products and bury StackBlitz overnight. The one thing that could save it: if StackBlitz can lock customers into a real business system (like handling payments, hosting, and authentication) so they become too tangled up to leave, or if Microsoft decides to push Bolt.new hard through its Azure and Office 365 channels, the company could start growing again.

Why
01
AI pressure: Anthropic Claude Artifacts/Agent, OpenAI Canvas, Lovable, Replit Agent. Frontier labs can build the same chat-to-app layer natively, and Lovable already pulled 10x more ARR from the same market. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Microsoft (GitHub Copilot, Azure/365 channel). Microsoft sells a $400M ARR rival product and could just as easily push its own Azure app-builder through enterprise deals instead of favoring Bolt. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Patented WebContainers runtime plus Bolt Cloud hosting/auth/payments wiring create real switching costs once an app is deployed there.
What would change this call
Bolt.new ARR figure reported in any funding or press update after mid-2026. shows whether the 15-month plateau at ~$40M has broken or continues.
Microsoft Azure/365 enterprise channel revenue or case studies disclosed after May 2026. shows whether the Microsoft partnership is generating material new revenue.
Anthropic, OpenAI, or Google shipping a native in-chat app deploy feature. would show frontier labs bypassing StackBlitz's orchestration layer.
Key numbers
  • Bolt.new ARR stuck near $40M since March 2025 (2026-07-01)
  • Lovable reached ~$400M ARR, 10x Bolt (2026-06-01)
  • Gross margins around 40% on token passthrough (2025-05-01)
Named risks
  • ARR flatlined at ~$40M for 15 months while Lovable and Replit scaled 6-10x. Severity: high
  • Core product is a thin orchestration layer over third-party Claude and GPT models, exposed to commoditization. Severity: high
  • Thin ~40% gross margins from token passthrough limit reinvestment and profitability. Severity: medium
  • Microsoft is simultaneously a distribution partner and a potential future competitor via Copilot. Severity: medium
  • Industry-wide security scrutiny of AI-generated code, e.g. Veracode found 45% of samples failed basic security tests, could trigger enterprise pullback. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is StackBlitz (Bolt.new) profitable in 2026?
No profit figures are disclosed. Bolt.new runs on roughly 40% gross margins as of May 2025 due to token passthrough costs to Anthropic and OpenAI, and ARR has stayed flat around $40M through mid-2026, suggesting thin economics rather than confirmed profitability.
Is Bolt.new losing to Lovable?
Yes. Bolt.new's ARR flatlined near $40M from March 2025 through July 2026, while rival Lovable reached roughly $400M ARR by mid-2026 and raised $330M at a $6.6B valuation in December 2025, a roughly tenfold revenue gap.
Could AI replace Bolt.new's core product?
Bolt.new's value is largely a thin orchestration layer over Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI models; as frontier labs ship native app-building features (like Artifacts or Canvas), the underlying code-generation edge could commoditize, per a 2026-07-17 competitive analysis.
Who owns StackBlitz?
StackBlitz is privately held and venture-backed, with investors including Greylock Partners, Google Ventures, Emergence Capital, Madrona, Insight Partners and others; it raised a $105.5M Series B around January 2025 implying a roughly $700M valuation.
What is StackBlitz's biggest competitor?
Lovable is StackBlitz's closest direct rival in the AI app-builder category, reaching about $400M ARR by mid-2026 versus Bolt.new's roughly $40M, a gap reported on 2026-07-17. Replit and Vercel's v0 also compete closely.
Has StackBlitz laid off employees?
No layoffs are reported. Instead, in a February 13, 2026 interview, CEO Eric Simons said StackBlitz has 'gone all in on agents' and plans to have more AI agents than human employees in 2026, rather than expanding human headcount.
