The call

Starling stays a profitable, licensed bank, but its equity story now depends on Engine's software arm outselling entrenched core-banking vendors abroad.

Starling Bank is a fully licensed UK bank that lets people and businesses manage money through a mobile app. It has real advantages that are hard to copy: a government banking license, £12.7 billion in customer deposits, and over a decade of transaction records. However, rival digital banks like Monzo and Revolut have grown bigger and faster in recent years, and Starling's own revenue fell for two straight years, which is a red flag. The company is now betting everything on Engine, a separate software business that sells banking tools to other companies, but Engine faces stiff competition from established software vendors and must prove it can win customers in North America over the next year to turn the company's fortunes around.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI cannot hold deposits or hold a PRA/FCA licence; it mainly powers fraud checks and support inside Starling's own apps. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Monzo and Revolut. Monzo and Revolut now post far higher revenue and profit and are growing faster while Starling's UK banking revenue fell two years running. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. A full PRA/FCA banking licence, FSCS-protected deposits, and a decade of UK transaction data that peers and AI tools can't copy overnight.
What would change this call
Starling reports FY27 UK banking revenue growth or a third straight annual decline. Shows whether Monzo/Revolut pressure on core banking is easing or worsening.
Engine announces signed North American clients and ARR crossing £100m within 12-18 months. Shows whether the Engine growth bet is offsetting core banking weakness.
FCA or PRA issues any further enforcement action on Starling's financial crime controls. Would show the 2024 £29m AML fine was not an isolated compliance lapse.

  • Engine committed ARR £70m, targeting over £100m (2026-05-21)
  • FCA fined Starling £29m for AML failings (2024-10-02)

  • Further AML or financial-crime enforcement after £29m FCA fine of October 2024. Severity: high
  • Board departures and unresolved IPO strategy creating governance uncertainty into 2026. Severity: medium
  • Engine's growth narrative depends on scaling past £70m ARR in crowded core-banking market. Severity: high
  • Peer neobanks Monzo and Revolut growing faster and larger, eroding relative market position. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Starling Bank profitable in 2026?
Yes. Starling reported FY26 (year to March 2026) profit before tax of £217.1m on revenue of £887.4m, its fifth consecutive profitable year, announced 2026-05-21. However this is a 3% decline from FY25 PBT, the second straight year of falling profit.
Who owns Starling Bank?
Starling is privately held, not listed. Key shareholders include Goldman Sachs Growth Equity, Fidelity, Qatar Investment Authority, Millennium Management, Railpen and Harald McPike, reportedly the largest holder. As of January 2026 CEO Raman Bhatia said no IPO would happen in 2026.
Is Starling Bank losing to Monzo and Revolut?
By scale, yes. In the FY26 reporting cycle Revolut posted £4.5bn revenue and £1.7bn PBT, and Monzo crossed £1.7bn revenue, both well above Starling's £887.4m revenue, per a 2026-05-27 industry comparison, though Starling remains profitable and licensed.
Could AI replace Starling Bank?
No. Deposit-taking requires Starling's full PRA/FCA banking licence, which AI cannot hold. Starling uses AI as a feature, including a Gemini-based scam detector (Oct 2025) and an agentic assistant (FY26), while AI-driven efficiency contributed to cutting about 130 banking-side jobs in July 2026.
Will Starling Bank IPO soon?
Unclear. Starling hired Morgan Stanley and Rothschild in September 2025 for a £3.5-4bn secondary share sale and formed a new holding structure, but CEO Raman Bhatia said in January 2026 no IPO would happen that year, and board departures over IPO strategy continued into June 2026.
What is Engine by Starling and does it matter?
Engine is Starling's B2B core-banking software arm, reporting £70m committed ARR and 25% revenue growth in FY26 (as of 2026-05-21), targeting over £100m ARR. It has signed banks in Romania, Australia, Canada and New Zealand and opened a New York office in September 2025.
