The call

Stori built a real license and distribution edge but rivals with the same playbook are raising more money and pulling ahead in value.

Stori gives credit cards to everyday Mexicans who don't qualify for traditional banks. Old banks like Banorte and BBVA cannot compete with Stori because branch costs make serving poor customers unprofitable. However, Stori faces much bigger threats: fintech startups like Plata, Ualá, and Klar have the same government license, the same customers, and more money in the bank. Stori's value dropped from $1.2 billion in 2022 and it is not the leader in Mexico's digital credit race. The one thing that could help: if Stori can prove it is actually making money by 2025 and if its partnership with Dr. Simi pharmacies becomes a real advantage that competitors cannot copy, then its 2027 stock offering could surprise people.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI underwriting tools help Stori score thin-file borrowers rather than threaten its lending business. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Plata, Ualá, Klar, Nu Mexico. Rivals with the same Sofipo license and thin-file thesis have raised far more capital and outpaced Stori's last $1.2B mark. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. A Sofipo license, 5M customers with proprietary repayment data, and exclusive co-brand deals with Shein and Dr. Simi pharmacies.
What would change this call
Stori's next valuation-setting round or 2027 IPO pricing versus its 2022 $1.2B mark. Shows whether Stori is closing or falling further behind Plata's $3.1B and Ualá's $3.2B valuations.
Nu México (Nubank) reported customer or deposit share growth in Mexico over the next year. Would indicate a larger, better-capitalized rival is capturing the same underbanked segment Stori targets.
CNBV announcement of tighter Sofipo licensing rules or capital requirements. Would show regulators narrowing the license-based moat Stori shares with Plata, Ualá, and Klar.

Questions people ask
Is Stori profitable in 2026?
As of August 2025, Stori CEO Bin Chen said the company was targeting sustainable profitability in 2025 and eyeing an IPO within about 24 months, meaning around 2027. No audited profit figures have been published as of July 2026.
How much is Stori worth compared to rivals like Plata and Ualá?
Stori was last valued at $1.2B in July 2022, with an undisclosed step-up after a $212M raise in August 2024. Rivals have since surpassed it: Plata hit $3.1B in October 2025 and Ualá reached $3.2B in March 2026.
Who owns Stori and is it publicly traded?
Stori is privately held and venture-backed, not publicly traded as of July 2026. Backers include BAI Capital, GIC, GGV Capital, Lightspeed, General Catalyst, Goldman Sachs and Davidson Kempner (debt), per its August 2024 $212M raise.
Could AI replace Stori's underwriting business?
AI already handles much of Stori's credit scoring and fraud detection, and rival Plata explicitly markets 'AI-powered core banking infrastructure' as of October 2025. But Stori's Sofipo deposit-taking license, obtained October 2023, is a regulatory moat AI alone cannot replicate.
Who is Stori's biggest competitor in Mexico?
Stori competes directly with Nu México (Nubank, 100M+ LatAm users), Plata ($3.1B valuation, October 2025), Ualá ($3.2B, March 2026) and Klar (>$800M, June 2025), all serving Mexico's underbanked with similar Sofipo-type licenses.
When might Stori go public?
In August 2025, CEO Bin Chen said Stori was targeting an IPO within roughly 24 months, pointing to around 2027, contingent on reaching sustainable profitability in 2025. No IPO filing had been confirmed as of July 2026.
