The call

Strava's social graph across every device brand is what Apple, Garmin, and AI coaches can't touch, but converting free users to paying ones remains the open question heading into an IPO.

Strava lets people track workouts, share them with friends, and see popular running and cycling routes on a global map. It is hard to copy because it has built up 195 million users who post their workouts, give each other encouragement (14 billion kudos per year), and create clubs. Apple, Google, and Garmin each try to keep people locked into their own devices and apps, so none of them can easily build what Strava has: a neutral meeting place for everyone no matter what watch or phone they use. AI coaching apps like Urunn can tell you how to train, but they cannot replicate the social part or the map of where people actually run and bike. The one thing that could change everything is whether Strava can get more of its 100 million free users to pay for premium features.

Why
01
AI pressure: AI-native coaching apps like Mo Farah's Urunn and LLM-generated training plans. AI coaches commoditize generic training plans but can't replicate clubs, kudos, and route data, Strava even plugged Claude into its own data via MCP. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Apple (Watch/Fitness+), Google (Health Connect), Garmin. Each ties fitness tracking to its own hardware, so none can build the cross-brand social layer Strava already owns. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. 195M users, 1M clubs, and a decade of GPS heatmap data that only works because every brand of watch feeds into it.
What would change this call
Garmin, WHOOP, or Oura ships a real social/club graph pulling engagement from Strava for 2+ quarters. Would show the social-graph moat is being breached, not just the coaching layer.
Strava's free-to-paid conversion trend disclosed in its S-1 or post-IPO filings. Would show whether monetization of 195M+ users supports its IPO valuation.
Under-25 cohort engagement (clubs, kudos, retention) flat or declining for 2+ quarters. Would show younger users shifting to AI-native apps like Urunn or wearables.
Key numbers
  • 195M+ users (June 2026)
  • $500M ARR reported (mid-2025)
  • $2.2B valuation (May 2025)
Named risks
  • Majority of 100M+ free users do not convert to paid subscriptions, a structural weak point ahead of IPO. Severity: high
  • Revenue figures conflict wildly across trackers, from $163M to $500M, raising data credibility concerns. Severity: medium
  • June 2026 API lockdown against AI scrapers risks alienating third-party developer ecosystem. Severity: medium
  • AI-native coaching apps commoditizing generic training-plan generation, pressuring the coaching layer. Severity: medium
  • IPO timing and valuation remain unconfirmed, subject to SEC review and market conditions as of Feb 2026 filing. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Strava profitable?
Strava has not disclosed audited profit figures. CEO Mike Martin told the WSJ in May 2025 the company was nearing $500M in annual recurring revenue, but as a private, pre-IPO company no net income figure has been made public.
Could AI replace Strava?
Unlikely for its core product. Strava's moat is its social graph, not tracking tech. It launched Athlete Intelligence, Instant Workouts, and a Claude MCP connector (June 1, 2026) to fold AI into the platform rather than be replaced by it.
Who owns Strava?
Strava is privately held and venture-backed, with investors including Sequoia Capital, TCV, and Jackson Square Ventures. It confidentially filed a draft S-1 with the SEC around February 2, 2026, ahead of a planned IPO.
Who is Strava's biggest competitor?
Garmin, WHOOP, and Oura compete on wearable coaching, and AI-native apps like Mo Farah's Urunn (launched April 2025) explicitly target Strava. But Strava's 1 million clubs and 14 billion kudos given in 2025 show its social graph remains dominant.
When will Strava go public?
Strava confidentially filed a draft S-1 with the SEC around February 2, 2026, with Reuters reporting in September 2025 that banks were hired for a listing possibly as early as 2026. No confirmed listing date has been set.
How many users does Strava have?
Strava reported more than 195 million users by June 2026, up from over 180 million in December 2025 and roughly 150 million in mid-2025, according to company press releases.
