The call

Stryker sells regulated hardware that AI can't replace, and its bigger risk is a rival robot closing the installed-base gap or another cyberattack, not a chatbot.

Stryker sells robotic surgery systems (called Mako) and orthopedic implants to hospitals worldwide. It is hard to copy because the U.S. Food and Drug Administration requires years of testing before any new device can be sold, Stryker has already placed about 2,700 of these robots in hospitals (locking them in), and the company owns thousands of patents. The main rival, Zimmer Biomet, has only about 2,000 of its competing robot systems installed, and J&J is spinning off its implant business as a separate company but has not yet launched a real threat. One thing that could change this picture is if Stryker's computer systems get hacked again (it was hit hard by a cyberattack in March 2026 that temporarily disabled 200,000 devices), or if a hacker attack exposes deeper security problems in the company's technology.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI shows up inside Stryker's own Mako robotic system and MedSurg tools as a feature, not as an outside product replacing implants or surgery. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Zimmer Biomet (ROSA robotic system) and J&J DePuy Synthes (spinning off as standalone company). Zimmer's ROSA trails Mako roughly 2,000 to 2,700 installed systems; J&J's ortho unit won't operate as an independent rival for 18-24 months. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. FDA approval requirements, a 2,700-system Mako installed base with locked-in implant purchases, and direct hospital sales in 75 countries.
What would change this call
Zimmer Biomet reports quarterly ROSA robotic system install-base numbers. Shows whether Zimmer is closing Stryker's Mako installed-base lead.
J&J DePuy Synthes spinoff completes and reports standalone results (2027 window). Shows whether the spinoff becomes a faster, more aggressive rival to Stryker.
Outcome of LFIT V40 hip MDL No. 2768 settlement or verdict amount. Shows whether product liability costs materially damage Stryker's finances or reputation.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 net sales $25.12B, up 11.2% (2025-12-31)

Questions people ask
Is Stryker profitable in 2026?
Yes. Stryker posted FY2025 net income of $3.246 billion (up 8.45% YoY) on net sales of $25.12 billion, and Q2 2026 adjusted operating income was $1.34 billion with adjusted EPS of $3.13, per its 2026-07-16 earnings update.
Did Stryker get hacked in 2026?
Yes, on 2026-03-11 an Iran-linked group called Handala hit Stryker with a wiper attack via compromised Microsoft Intune access, wiping 200,000+ devices across roughly 79 countries and delaying surgeries. Stryker declared it contained by 2026-03-23 and fully operational by early April 2026.
Who is Stryker's biggest competitor in robotics?
Zimmer Biomet, whose ROSA robotic system has an estimated ~2,000 installed units versus Stryker's Mako at ~2,700 as of 2025-10-31 reporting. Zimmer also bought AI-guidance firm OrthoGrid Systems in August 2024 to compete on surgical-guidance features.
Could AI replace Stryker's core business?
No. Stryker's moat is physical and regulatory: FDA-cleared implants, an installed base of ~2,700 Mako robotic systems, direct hospital distribution in ~75 countries, and 14,600 patents. AI appears only as a feature inside Stryker's own Mako and MedSurg products, not a substitute for regulated hardware.
How did Stryker's stock and sales react to the March 2026 cyberattack?
Q1 2026 net sales came in at $6.02 billion, up only 2.6% YoY and below analyst estimates of $6.34-6.40 billion, due to roughly three weeks of operational disruption. Sales rebounded by Q2 2026 to $5.9 billion with 9.1% organic growth reported 2026-07-16.
Who owns Stryker and is it a takeover target?
Stryker Corporation trades publicly on the NYSE under ticker SYK as part of the S&P 500, with no parent company. Its market capitalization was roughly $121-129 billion as of mid-to-late July 2026, making a takeover highly unlikely given its scale.
