The call

Studocu built the library students used to search, now it has to prove that library beats asking ChatGPT directly.

Studocu is a website where 60 million students find study notes and documents shared by classmates at their school. For ten years, searching their library was easier than studying from scratch, but now ChatGPT and Google's AI can answer homework questions instantly without visiting any website. Studocu tried to fight back in October 2025 by making their own AI that pulls answers from their collection of notes instead of the open internet, but nobody knows yet if students will use it instead of just asking ChatGPT. The company stays profitable today, but if Google's AI answers keep getting better and students stop clicking through to Studocu from search results, the site could shrink the way Chegg did when AI took off.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude. Students now ask a chatbot for answers instead of searching Studocu's library, the same shift that sank Chegg. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Google AI Overviews. AI Overviews answer study questions directly in search results, cutting the organic referral traffic Studocu depends on. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A 50 million document dataset tied to specific courses and professors, which Studocu now feeds into its own AI answers.
What would change this call
Studocu's organic Google referral traffic trend through Q4 2026 and Q1 2027. Falling traffic would show AI Overviews are diverting students before they reach Studocu.
Published retention or paid-conversion data for the Oct 2025 'Studocu AI' feature by early 2027. Would show whether grounding answers in its document library actually keeps users over bare ChatGPT.
Headcount or layoff announcements following the 8.1% YoY decline reported mid-2026. Continued shrinkage would signal the business is contracting despite the AI pivot.

Questions people ask
Is Studocu profitable in 2025?
Yes, per Dutch corporate filings cited by Amsterdam startup press, Studocu posted a net profit of roughly €1.2-1.4M in fiscal 2023, suggesting a sustainably run business rather than a growth-at-all-costs model, though no more recent audited figure is public.
Could AI chatbots like ChatGPT replace Studocu?
Studocu's core job, searching peer notes instead of asking an AI, is now done natively by ChatGPT and Gemini. Studocu responded in October 2025 with 'Studocu AI' grounded in its 50M-document library, but independent proof of retention or conversion lift has not yet surfaced.
Who owns Studocu?
Studocu is privately held and VC-backed, not publicly traded. Investors across three rounds include Peak Capital, Point Nine Capital, Piton Capital, and Partech, which led its $50M (€41.1M) Series B in May 2021. No new priced round has been reported since.
Is Studocu a safe company to join right now?
Mixed signal: Crustdata shows headcount at 158 in June 2026 but down 8.1% year over year, while user traffic reportedly grew 21% quarter over quarter in mid-2026, suggesting AI-driven efficiency rather than distress, but recent contraction is real.
Who is Studocu's biggest competitor?
Course Hero is Studocu's closest direct rival and was valued at roughly $1.1 billion as of 2021. Chegg is the larger incumbent in homework help but has been visibly gutted by ChatGPT substitution since 2023, a cautionary case for Studocu's own category.
How many users does Studocu have in 2026?
Studocu reports about 60 million students per month across 120,000+ institutions and 50 million study resources as of its October 2025 AI product launch, up from 15 million monthly active users disclosed at its 2021 Series B.
