The call

Systran survives as the sovereign-translation piece inside a bigger French intelligence-software company, while its open-market translation business gets eaten by free and near-free AI models.

Systran makes software that translates text between languages, traditionally sold to governments and organizations that need to keep data on their own computers rather than send it to the cloud. The problem: ChatGPT, Claude, and other large language models now translate almost as well for free or cheap, and companies like DeepL offer the same on-premises option with better brand recognition and more staff working on it. The one thing that could save Systran is if its parent company invests in keeping it as a standalone product, but current signs point the opposite direction, with Systran's workforce shrinking while the parent company grows, suggesting Systran is being absorbed as just one feature within larger software products rather than treated as its own business.

Why
01
AI pressure: GPT-4o, Claude, Gemini, DeepL. Buyer guides now list frontier chat models as swap-ins for Systran on general translation jobs, squeezing its non-sovereign business. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: DeepL, Google Cloud Translation, Microsoft Azure Translator. DeepL competes directly in the same EU-sovereign translation niche with a stronger brand and bigger R&D budget. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Government and classified on-prem contracts that cloud giants and open models legally cannot touch.
What would change this call
SYSTRAN headcount count in ChapsVision's next annual filing or press disclosure. Further decline confirms it is being absorbed as a feature, not grown as a product.
Disclosed cross-sell revenue from ChapsVision's DGSI/BfV sovereign contracts into SYSTRAN specifically. Would show SYSTRAN becoming a mandated system-of-record rather than a shrinking side unit.
DeepL announcing a new sovereign or on-prem government deployment in France or Germany. Would show DeepL directly displacing SYSTRAN in its last defensible niche.
Key numbers
  • Headcount fell 104 to 84, down 19 percent (June 2026)
  • Parent ChapsVision revenue about 200 million euros (2025)
  • Systran 2019 revenue was $15 million, up 18 percent (2019)
Named risks
  • General-purpose translation core commoditized by free/low-cost frontier LLMs. Severity: high
  • Headcount declining 19% (2022-2026) while parent ChapsVision grows, signaling deprioritization. Severity: medium
  • Parent ChapsVision's strategic focus centered on Argonos/data-intelligence, not translation. Severity: medium
  • DeepL and cloud giants compete in same or adjacent sovereignty-friendly space with more resources. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is Systran profitable in 2026?
No recent standalone financials are public. Systran reported $15 million revenue in 2019 (up 18% YoY) before being folded into ChapsVision in January 2024; since then its results are consolidated into parent ChapsVision's reported €200 million 2025 revenue, with no separate profitability disclosed.
Could AI replace Systran's translation business?
Buyer guides as of May 2026 already list GPT-4o, Claude, Gemini and DeepSeek as direct substitutes for Systran in document translation, since frontier LLMs now translate at near-parity quality for general-purpose text, leaving Systran's on-premise/sovereign niche as its main defensible ground.
Who owns Systran now?
French company ChapsVision acquired Systran outright in January 2024, explicitly framed as returning the translation technology to French ownership after South Korean investor STIC Investments held a 51 percent controlling stake since September 2020.
Is Systran laying off staff?
Third-party headcount tracking (Crustdata) shows Systran shrank from 104 employees in October 2022 to 84 by June 2026, a 19 percent decline, even as parent ChapsVision grew headcount over the same period.
Who is Systran's biggest competitor?
Buyer comparisons as of May 2026 group Systran with DeepL, Google Cloud Translation, Microsoft Azure Translator and Amazon Translate; DeepL is the closest peer in Systran's sovereignty-focused European niche but has stronger brand recognition and a larger R&D budget.
Is Systran growing or shrinking?
Systran itself is shrinking, down to 84 employees by June 2026 from 104 in October 2022 (Crustdata), while its parent ChapsVision grew from 738 to 830 employees between 2024 and 2025 (Revelio Labs, June 2026), pointing to internal deprioritization.
