The call

T-Mobile sits on licensed spectrum and a national network that AI cannot copy, while its real long-term question is whether satellite service ever cuts carriers out of the picture.

T-Mobile sells wireless phone service to over 140 million American customers. It is very hard for anyone new to start a rival phone company because the US government only licenses a limited number of radio frequencies to operate cell networks, and T-Mobile owns some of those frequencies plus the physical towers and equipment needed to deliver service. The biggest potential threat is SpaceX's Starlink satellite system: if SpaceX starts selling phone service directly to customers instead of partnering with T-Mobile, it could weaken T-Mobile's advantage by offering an alternative way to make calls.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI handles about half of customer service calls and tunes network performance, cutting costs rather than threatening the core business. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: SpaceX Starlink direct-to-cell. T-Mobile has exclusive US rights to Starlink's satellite texting and calling; a standalone Starlink phone plan would bypass carriers entirely. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. FCC spectrum licenses and roughly 100,000 physical cell sites that no software company or new entrant can legally or practically replicate.
What would change this call
T-Mobile postpaid net adds and churn in Q3/Q4 2026 earnings reports. Whether the Q2 2026 slowdown and rising churn are a trend or a one-off blip.
SpaceX announcing a standalone, carrier-independent Starlink mobile billing plan. Would show satellite service bypassing T-Mobile's exclusive carrier partnership.
Deutsche Telekom's decision on a full buyout of T-Mobile US minority shares. Would show whether parent ownership structure and equity terms are shifting.

Questions people ask
Is T-Mobile US profitable?
Yes. T-Mobile US reported FY2025 revenue of approximately $88.3 billion and net income of about $11.0 billion as of December 31, 2025. Q2 2026 revenue reached $22.79 billion, up 7.9% year-over-year, beating consensus EPS estimates on July 23, 2026.
Who owns T-Mobile US?
Deutsche Telekom AG held approximately 52.8% of T-Mobile US capital as of February 10, 2026, and confirmed no plans to sell shares in 2026. Bloomberg reported April 21, 2026 that Deutsche Telekom is weighing a full buyout that could become the largest-ever public M&A deal.
Could AI replace T-Mobile's business?
No. T-Mobile's moat is FCC-licensed spectrum, physical cell towers, and regulatory authorizations that AI cannot replicate. AI is instead deployed internally, handling roughly half of customer service calls (over 200,000 daily conversations) as of May 5, 2026, to cut costs, not replace the licensed carrier business.
Is T-Mobile losing to Verizon or AT&T?
Not on growth. Verizon remains larger with 146.8 million subscribers (Q1 2026) and $138.2 billion FY2025 revenue versus T-Mobile's ~140 million subscribers and $88.3 billion revenue, but T-Mobile posted a record big-three NPS of 46 in Q2 2026 and leads AT&T's 109.8 million subscribers (Q2 2026).
Did T-Mobile get in legal trouble over data breaches?
Yes. A King County Superior Court judge ruled on July 18, 2026 that T-Mobile violated Washington state's data-breach notification law tied to the 2021 breach affecting 40 million people, with further proceedings and penalties pending as of that date.
Is T-Mobile stock a good buy after Q2 2026 earnings?
Mixed signal. T-Mobile beat EPS estimates on July 23, 2026 with $22.79 billion revenue, yet shares fell 5-11% the same day on a revenue miss and softer subscriber outlook. BofA upgraded TMUS to buy that same month citing limited satellite competition exposure.
