The call

TAL's classes and devices are growing fast and people keep using them, but Beijing's rules, US delisting risk, and free AI tutors from ByteDance sit right next to that growth.

TAL Education teaches students online and makes AI learning devices that kids use each week. It is hard to replace because China's government limits foreign companies from entering the education market, and TAL built its own AI models for math tutoring that work well on its devices. However, ByteDance now offers a free AI tutor inside its popular app that everyone already has, which makes people less willing to buy TAL's $200 to $500 devices, and other Chinese companies like New Oriental are also building competing AI tutoring products and devices. The biggest threat to TAL is not whether its business works, but whether the U.S. government or China's government create new rules that hurt the company's value to shareholders, even if the business itself keeps making money.

Why
01
AI pressure: ByteDance's Doubao AI tutor. Doubao's free in-app AI tutor rides an app everyone already has, making people question paying $200-500 for TAL's device. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: New Oriental Education (EDU). New Oriental is bigger by market cap, holds the same China license, and is rebuilding its own AI tutoring push aggressively. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. China's licensing rules keep foreign AI players out, and 80% weekly device usage plus 80% Peiyou retention show people keep using what they bought.
What would change this call
TAL reports device average selling price (ASP) trend in Q1 FY2027 earnings on 2026-07-30. Falling ASPs would show device pricing power eroding against cheaper rivals and free AI features.
ByteDance expands Doubao from app feature into a standalone device or school-district offering. Would show a free-tool competitor moving to directly displace TAL's paid hardware business.
Outcome of the SDNY securities case fairness hearing on 2026-10-29 and the June 2026 new suit. Unresolved litigation would show legal overhang still weighing on TAL's equity despite operating strength.

Questions people ask
Is TAL Education profitable in 2026?
Yes. TAL's fiscal year 2026 (ended Feb 28, 2026) net income hit $530.8 million, up 527.4% from $84.6 million in FY2025, on revenue of $3,008.9 million, up 33.7% year over year, per its April 23, 2026 earnings release.
Who is TAL Education's biggest competitor?
New Oriental Education (NYSE: EDU) is TAL's largest rival by market value, roughly $7.56 billion versus TAL's $5.7-5.9 billion as of July 2026. Gaotu Techedu, iFlytek, Xiaoyuan, and ByteDance's Doubao are also contesting TAL's AI tutoring hardware market.
Could AI replace TAL Education's tutors?
TAL is automating parts of its own tutoring via proprietary AI: its MathGPT model, AI Think 101 companion, and 'Xiao Si' assistant had logged over 1 billion activations by December 2025. Free rivals like ByteDance's Doubao pressure device pricing but haven't displaced TAL's core model.
Is TAL Education stock safe given ongoing lawsuits?
Not entirely risk-free. TAL faces an SDNY securities class action (case 22-cv-01015, motion to dismiss briefed September 2025), a $14.1M settlement with an October 29, 2026 fairness hearing, and a newer suit filed June 2026, alongside China's still-active Double Reduction tutoring rules.
Is TAL Education stock a buy in 2026?
Analyst consensus rated TAL a 'Strong Buy' with an average price target of $15.59 as of July 9, 2026, implying roughly 49-51% upside from its $10.30-10.57 trading range, though shares fell about 9.9% right after the strong FY2026 earnings release on April 29, 2026.
Is TAL Education laying off staff?
No, headcount is growing. TAL reported 26,100 employees as of February 28, 2026, up 13.48% from 23,000 a year earlier, according to filings-based data from Macrotrends, consistent with its post-crackdown recovery and revenue growth.
