The call

Tasly's old-line TCM approvals still protect it from copycats and AI, but its new state-backed owner, not a competitor, will decide whether it grows or gets quietly folded in.

Tasly makes traditional Chinese medicine and pharmaceutical products and has been doing so profitably for 30 years with government approval and its own supply chain. It is hard to copy because it has regulatory licenses, decades of manufacturing know-how, and supplier relationships, and artificial intelligence cannot replace the actual factory work or distribution network. However, the company was acquired by a state-owned parent company in March 2025, the Chinese government is pushing down drug prices through new insurance rules, and pharmacy sales dropped 14 percent in the last year, so what matters most is whether the new owner will invest in growth or just cut costs and shrink the business.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Tasly uses its own AI4TCM platform to speed drug research; no AI product replaces regulated TCM manufacturing or approvals. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: China Resources Pharmaceutical Group (via CR Sanjiu). CR Sanjiu completed a 28% controlling buy-in in March 2025; the risk now is how CR runs Tasly, not a rival stealing its customers. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. NMPA approval since 1993, proprietary Danshen formula, and distribution into about 26 countries keep rivals from copying its core product.
What would change this call
China Resources Pharmaceutical announces asset injections or cross-selling of Tasly into its hospital network by Q2 2026. Would show CR is investing for growth rather than harvesting the acquired unit.
Tasly reports two consecutive quarters of revenue growth after FY2025 decline. Would indicate the procurement/margin pressure and integration disruption are stabilizing.
Further headcount cuts beyond the 3.6% FY2025 reduction disclosed in 2026 filings. Would suggest CR is treating Tasly as a cost-cutting integration target rather than a growth flagship.

Questions people ask
Is Tasly Pharmaceutical profitable in 2025?
Yes. Tasly reported net profit of approximately RMB 1.10 billion for FY2025 despite total revenue falling 3.08% YoY to RMB 8.236 billion as of December 31, 2025, per its filing dated February 6, 2026.
Who owns Tasly Pharmaceutical now?
China Resources Sanjiu completed acquisition of a 28% stake for roughly RMB 6.2 billion on March 27, 2025, making it Tasly's controlling shareholder via parent China Resources Pharmaceutical Group. Founder Yan Xijun and family retained over 17% but lost control.
Could AI replace Tasly's drug manufacturing business?
Unlikely. Tasly holds NMPA regulatory approval since 1993 for its flagship Danshen Dropping Pills and proprietary herb supply chains that AI cannot replicate. It uses AI internally as an R&D tool, publishing its own AI4TCM platform in November 2025.
Is Tasly Pharmaceutical laying off employees?

Who is Tasly Pharmaceutical's biggest competitor?
Domestically, Yunnan Baiyao and Tong Ren Tang rank as stronger TCM brands per Brand Finance's 2026 ranking, and Guangzhou Pharmaceutical was named the fastest-growing Chinese pharma brand in 2026. Its new majority owner, China Resources Sanjiu, was formerly a rival.
