The call

Teachable still has tens of thousands of schools and a parent with deep pockets, but growth has flatlined and staff keeps shrinking while AI chat eats the courses it sells.

Teachable is a platform where teachers, coaches, and experts build and sell online courses to students. It handles payments, hosting, and course tools so creators don't have to. Right now it is not hard to copy or replace: competitors like Kajabi and Thinkific offer the same features, and ChatGPT or Claude can now generate entire courses instantly for free, which undercuts the whole idea of paying for a course platform. The company itself is shrinking (fewer employees, flat growth, customers leaving after a price increase), and it is owned by a bigger company called Hotmart that may or may not keep investing in it. The one thing that could change everything is if Teachable pivots to selling courses in bulk to companies and schools instead of individuals, which would be harder for AI to replace and would give the platform a real reason to exist again.

Why
01
AI pressure: ChatGPT and Claude. Free AI chat answers the how-to questions people used to buy courses for, and copies Teachable's own AI quiz and curriculum tools to parity. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Kajabi and Thinkific. Rivals match Teachable's features while Thinkific dropped its free-tier cap right as Teachable killed its own, pulling price-sensitive creators away. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. 35,000+ live schools already wired into Teachable's payments, tax, and hosting, which is real switching friction even without a technical edge.

Questions people ask
Is Teachable profitable in 2026?
No profitability figures are publicly disclosed. Revenue estimates conflict wildly, from ~$14M (ZoomInfo) to ~$59.2M (Growjo, 2022), and Teachable has operated as a wholly owned Hotmart subsidiary since its ~$250M acquisition in March 2020 with no independent financial reporting.
Who owns Teachable?
Teachable is wholly owned by Hotmart, a Brazil/Netherlands based creator-economy platform, which acquired it in March 2020 for approximately $250 million, well above Teachable's last disclosed 2018 valuation of $134 million.
Is Teachable laying off staff?
No formal layoff has been announced, but headcount estimates show contraction from roughly 200 to 330 employees around 2020 to 2022 down to an estimated 80 to 160 by 2024 to 2026, based on conflicting Growjo, ZoomInfo, Datanyze, and Built In figures.
Could ChatGPT replace Teachable?
Teachable's own October 21, 2025 rebrand copy admits the threat, saying anyone can now ask AI for information. An independent reviewer in May 2026 found Teachable's AI curriculum generator output was reproducible with a single ChatGPT or Claude prompt.
Who is Teachable's biggest competitor?
Teachable competes mid-pack with Kajabi, Thinkific, LearnWorlds, and Podia. Kajabi's January 2026 price hike to $143-179+/month reportedly pushed some creators to Teachable, while Thinkific's 2026 removal of student caps pulled price-sensitive users away.
What is Teachable worth today?
No current valuation is public. Its last disclosed pre-acquisition valuation was $134 million in 2018, and Hotmart paid approximately $250 million to acquire it in March 2020; no updated valuation has surfaced since.
