The call

Tele2 sits on physical network assets and a growing dividend, with the real questions being leadership continuity and who ends up controlling the shares, not AI or a single rival.

Tele2 runs cell networks and internet service across Sweden and other Nordic countries, making money by selling phone and broadband to homes and businesses. It is hard to replace because it owns radio spectrum licenses, thousands of cell towers, and fiber cables, assets that take years and billions to build, and competitors like Telia already control the biggest market share, so Telia cannot buy Tele2 without breaking antitrust rules. The main question is not whether Tele2 survives the next five years, but whether it grows faster than 2 percent per year; that test will come when its new CEO starts in mid-2026, several other top leaders are leaving at the same time, and the company's largest shareholder group is quietly buying more stock.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI is not eating this business; Tele2 uses it to cut costs and sells sovereign AI cloud capacity through Scaleway. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Telia Company. Telia holds over 33% of Swedish mobile share and competes hard, but spectrum rules and duopoly norms block it from absorbing Tele2. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Owning licensed spectrum, cell sites, and fiber plus a 20-year anchor tower lease makes the network itself the barrier to entry.
What would change this call
New CEO Nicholas Hogberg's Q3/Q4 2026 results versus reiterated FY2026 guidance. Tests leadership continuity after senior departures (CTIO, EVP Ops).
Freya/iliad voting stake crossing 27 to 30 percent threshold. Would show possible effective control or mandatory-offer trigger changing strategy.
Scheduled 25 May and 16 October 2026 dividend tranches paid as declared. A cut would signal deteriorating cash flow, undermining the growth thesis.

Questions people ask
Is Tele2 profitable in 2026?
Yes. Tele2 reported Q2 2026 net profit of SEK 1.2bn (EPS SEK 1.75) and underlying EBITDAaL of SEK 3.0bn, up 4% organically, on 16 July 2026, while reiterating full-year 2026 guidance.
Who owns Tele2 AB?
No single controlling owner. Freya Investissement, jointly controlled by iliad and Xavier Niel's NJJ, holds about 19% of shares and 27% of votes as of February 2026, after buying Kinnevik's entire stake for SEK 13.0bn in 2024.
Could AI replace Tele2's core business?
No. Tele2's mobile and broadband service relies on regulated spectrum licenses and physical network infrastructure that AI cannot replicate. Tele2 uses AI internally for cost efficiency and launched a Scaleway sovereign cloud and AI B2B offering on 28 May 2026.
Is Tele2 cutting jobs?
Tele2's 2025 Annual Report lists 3,866 employees, reflecting a multi-year cost-discipline trend under former CEO Jean Marc Harion, whose tenure ended 30 June 2026 when Nicholas Högberg became President and CEO.
Who is Tele2's biggest competitor?
Telia Company is Tele2's largest rival, holding roughly 33 to 35% of the Swedish mobile market versus Tele2's number-3 position with about 2.195 million subscribers as of Q4 2025, per Wikipedia's MNO data.
Is it risky to join Tele2 right now?
There is leadership churn: CEO Jean Marc Harion departed 30 June 2026 and Nicholas Högberg took over 1 July 2026, following CTIO and EVP Operations departures in the prior six months, though Q2 2026 results and guidance remained solid.
