Telecom Italia (TIM)
Italy's largest fixed and mobile phone company, now being absorbed by state-controlled Poste Italiane.
TIM is stabilizing financially while its stock market life ends, folded into Poste Italiane as Iliad and the Swisscom-Fastweb-Vodafone bundle keep pushing on mobile share.
Telecom Italia (TIM) is Italy's largest phone and internet company. The Italian government is buying it through a state-owned postal company, which will convert TIM shareholders into postal company shareholders by the end of 2026, ending the equity story. TIM is protected by government rules and owns valuable data centers and wireless licenses, but smaller rival Iliad and the merged Swisscom-Fastweb-Vodafone are taking phone customers away, and big tech companies like Microsoft and Google are taking away the lucrative business-customer side by offering their own cloud and IT services. The one thing that could change the picture is whether TIM can stop losing mobile customers and keep its business-customer division profitable after the government takeover is complete.
AGCM issues its ruling on the TIM-Fastweb Prism 5G-sharing deal by 30 April 2027. Would show whether TIM's network-sharing advantage with Fastweb survives or gets unwound.
Poste Italiane completes the TIM takeover and delists TIM from Euronext Milan by end-2026. Confirms TIM's public equity story ends and it becomes a state-controlled utility.
- 2025 revenue €13.73bn, up 2.7%
- Net debt down to €6.85bn from €7.27bn
- Poste offer values TIM at about €10.8bn
- Poste Italiane takeover collapses, leaving TIM re-leveraged and strategically rudderless.
- AGCM antitrust ruling (due by 30 Apr 2027) forces unwinding of TIM-Fastweb 5G sharing deal.
- Hyperscalers (Microsoft, Google, AWS) disintermediate TIM Enterprise, its only growth segment.
- Continued subscriber and share losses to Iliad and Swisscom-Fastweb-Vodafone.
- Strategic and industrial-plan freeze during Poste takeover process delays restructuring decisions.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Iliad Italia | gaining on | Added 918,000 mobile lines in 2025, reaching 12.6 million subscribers by end-2025 |
| Swisscom (Fastweb-Vodafone Italia) | gaining on | Integrating merged Fastweb-Vodafone into stronger convergent rival through 2025-2026 |
| Microsoft and Google (hyperscalers) | contesting | TIM Enterprise resells their cloud/AI via partnerships signed Feb and Jun 2026, risking disintermediation |
| INWIT | contesting | TIM terminated towers contract amid 5G infrastructure dispute around late March 2026 |
- Is Telecom Italia (TIM) profitable in 2026?
- TIM returned to consolidated net profit of €519 million in FY2025 (year ended 31 Dec 2025), with €297 million attributable to shareholders, after prior losses. Revenue reached €13.73bn, up 2.7% YoY, and EBITDA after lease rose 6.5% to about €3.7bn, per TIM's 11 March 2026 board results.
- Will TIM stock be delisted?
- Yes, likely. Poste Italiane's takeover offer, board-approved 18 July 2026, is expected to complete by end-2026, which would delist TIM from Euronext Milan and return it to majority state ownership about 30 years after its 1997 privatization, per Light Reading, 20 July 2026.
- Who is TIM's biggest competitor?
- Iliad Italia and the newly merged Swisscom-owned Fastweb-Vodafone Italia are TIM's fastest-growing rivals. Iliad added 918,000 mobile lines in 2025 to reach about 12.6 million subscribers, while Swisscom's integration of Fastweb and Vodafone Italia (cleared December 2024) is forming a stronger convergent competitor through 2025-2026.
- Could AI or hyperscalers replace TIM's enterprise business?
- TIM's enterprise arm increasingly resells Microsoft and Google AI/cloud services rather than owning the stack: it partnered with Microsoft on cloud, cybersecurity and AI on 19 February 2026, and became the first Italian operator to offer Google Gemini-based AI Pro/AI Plus on 3 June 2026, exposing it to hyperscaler disintermediation over time.
- How much debt does TIM have and is it improving?
- TIM's adjusted net financial debt after lease fell to €6.85 billion at end-2025 from €7.27 billion at end-2024, helped by the 2024 NetCo sale to KKR (up to €22.0bn valuation) and the pending €700 million Sparkle sale to Italy's MEF and Retelit, EU-cleared in April 2026.
