Tether
Issuer of USDT, the top dollar stablecoin used in crypto trading and payments.
Tether prints record profit and dominates stablecoin supply, but has already lost the EU and faces an unresolved US access clock with no completed audit.
Tether issues USDT, a digital currency pegged to the US dollar that people use to move money and trade. It dominates the market with about 60% share and makes over a billion dollars per quarter, partly because banks in many countries won't serve certain regions, giving Tether real customers with nowhere else to go. However, the company is losing access to Europe starting in July 2026 due to new rules, may face US restrictions unless Congress passes reciprocal laws by 2028, and has never completed an audit by a major accounting firm in twelve years, making it impossible to know if the company's money claims are solid. If Tether gets a real audit and keeps US access, the picture stays the same. If either fails, the regulatory walls could collapse and banks or Circle (a rival stablecoin) could take over the business.
GENIUS Act reciprocity rulemaking outcome around January 2027. Determines whether USDT keeps or loses access to US exchanges and venues by 2028.
USA₤ institutional adoption volume reported after its January 2026 launch. Shows whether Tether can win US market share rather than only defend emerging markets.
- $184-189B USDT in circulation
- $1.04B net profit in Q1 2026
- ~$141B in US Treasury holdings
- No completed Big Four audit after 12 years of operation as of mid-2026.
- GENIUS Act reciprocity determination could exclude USDT from US venues by 2028.
- USDT already excluded from EU-regulated exchanges under MiCA since July 2026.
- Profit model depends on elevated US Treasury yields; rate cuts would compress reserve income.
- Historical CFTC and NY AG settlements over reserve disclosures remain part of scrutiny narrative.

- Is Tether profitable in 2026?
- Yes. Tether posted a $1.04 billion net profit in Q1 2026 per a BDO attestation, with excess reserves hitting a record $8.23 billion and total assets of about $191.77 billion against $183.5 billion in liabilities, as of May 1, 2026.
- Who owns Tether?
- Tether is privately held, linked to iFinex/Bitfinex. CEO Paolo Ardoino holds an estimated ~13% stake per Bloomberg. Former CIO Richard Heathcote holds a 1.26% stake and was seeking to sell part of it via PJT Partners as of July 7, 2026.
- Has Tether ever had a full audit?
- No. As of mid-2026 Tether has never completed a Big Four audit in its 12-year history. CEO Ardoino stated in March 2026 that Tether is targeting a full audit and a $50 billion valuation by end of 2026, but it remains unfinished.
- Will USDT be banned in the United States?
- Not yet decided. Under the GENIUS Act, foreign issuers like Tether need a Treasury reciprocity determination or face exclusion from US exchanges by roughly 2028; implementing rules due July 18, 2026 slipped to an operative date of January 2027.
- Is Tether losing the EU market to Circle?
- Yes. Under MiCA, USDT lost EU exchange access effective July 1, 2026, with Coinbase Europe, Kraken, Crypto.com, Binance EEA and Revolut (by August 31, 2026) delisting it, while MiCA-compliant Circle (USDC) and Ripple (RLUSD) fill the gap.
- Could AI replace Tether's business?
- Unlikely. Tether's profit engine is Treasury yield-carry on reserves, not an AI-automatable service. Tether is instead an AI infrastructure investor, holding a 48% stake in Rumble and committing $150 million in GPU compute as of June 17, 2026.
