The call

The tunnels are real and carrying riders, but actual throughput trails the company's own numbers, and no outside audit has confirmed the economics behind the $20B ask.

The Boring Company builds underground tunnels for moving people around cities, starting with a Vegas Loop that has carried millions of riders. The physical tunnels themselves are hard to copy because Boring has exclusive rights in Clark County for 50 years and uses special narrow-tunnel technology that big competitors like Herrenknecht and traditional construction firms have not bothered to replicate. The real question is whether the tunnels can actually make money per rider and operate reliably at the scale Boring claims, which independent experts doubt and which the company has not yet proven. The Vegas Airport Connector opening and whether it actually moves the number of passengers Boring promises will be the first real test of whether the whole idea works as advertised.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI runs inside TBC, not against it: ZPIT autonomous mining and Tesla FSD cut labor costs rather than threaten the tunnel business. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Herrenknecht AG and transit contractors like Dragados, Kiewit. They build bigger tunnels but do not chase TBC's narrow-bore, city-franchise model, so direct competition stays limited. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. A 50-year Clark County exclusive franchise and 4M+ riders already moving through built tunnels are hard for anyone to copy overnight.
What would change this call
Vegas Airport Connector opens and independent riders/hour counts are published. Tests whether real throughput nears the 90k/hour claim or stays near 40k busy-day levels.
The pending $4B raise at $20B valuation closes or is withdrawn/repriced. Shows whether investors accept the valuation jump or the deal stalls.
Dubai Loop tunneling actually begins on the scheduled late-2026 timeline. Confirms whether TBC can execute internationally or slips like other timelines.
Key numbers
  • 4M+ cumulative Vegas Loop riders (2026-07-26)
  • $4B raise sought at $20B valuation, unclosed (2026-07-25)
  • Dubai Loop phase 1: $154M, 6.4km, targets 2027 (2026-02-05)
Named risks
  • Unproven unit economics; actual ridership (~1M/year) far below 90,000/hour target. Severity: high
  • Nevada regulators cite ~800 environmental violations and contested OSHA safety citations. Severity: high
  • Vegas Airport Connector opening slipped from Q1 2026 target toward year-end 2026. Severity: medium
  • Reported $4B raise at $20B valuation not yet closed as of Jul 25, 2026. Severity: medium
  • Heavy dependence on Elon Musk and shared Tesla/SpaceX resources for operations. Severity: medium

Questions people ask
Is The Boring Company profitable?
No public revenue figures exist. Aggregator estimates ranging $3.7M to $254.1M come from data-broker sites with no primary reporting behind them, so profitability cannot be confirmed as of July 2026; the company discloses no audited financials.
Who owns The Boring Company?
It is privately held and majority-controlled by Elon Musk, who conceived it in December 2016 and registered it as TBC on January 11, 2017, spinning it out from SpaceX as an independent company in early 2018.
Who is The Boring Company's biggest competitor?
Herrenknecht AG, Germany's dominant heavy tunnel-boring-machine maker with roughly 5,000 employees (behind projects like the Gotthard Base Tunnel), though it is structurally unable to replicate TBC's municipal Loop-franchise business model, as of July 2026.
Could AI replace The Boring Company?
No. TBC's own Zero-People-in-Tunnel autonomous mining, demonstrated May 13, 2025, automates TBC's internal labor rather than threatening the company externally; its moat is physical tunnels and multi-decade franchises like Clark County's 50-year Vegas Loop deal, which AI cannot replicate.
Is The Boring Company raising money in 2026?
Yes. As of July 25, 2026, TBC was reportedly in talks to raise about $4 billion at a $20 billion valuation, nearly quadrupling its April 2022 Series C valuation of $5.675 billion, though the deal had not closed.
When will the Vegas Airport Connector open?
President Steve Davis targeted Q1 2026 for the 2.25-mile tunnel to Harry Reid International Airport, but as of July 27, 2026 it remained under construction, with opening pushed toward a few months out or year-end.
