Tide
UK digital banking and admin platform built for small business owners.
Tide leads UK SME banking on paper, but a better-funded, now fully licensed Revolut Business is closing the trust gap that once set Tide apart.
Tide is a bank for small UK businesses, offering accounts, invoicing tools, and loans all in one place. It has grown fast and makes real money, which is hard for new banks to do. But Revolut, a much larger fintech company, just got a full UK banking license in March 2026 and is now offering the same services to the same customers with far more money behind it. The one thing that could save Tide is if it can get its own full banking license quickly or find a buyer willing to pay for its customer base and UK reputation, otherwise it will probably shrink over the next few years as Revolut takes market share.
Tide applies for or receives a full UK banking license. Would show Tide closing the FSCS protection gap versus Revolut, Starling, Monzo.
Tide's UK member count or market share figures in its next reporting cycle. Would show whether Tide's 15% UK SME share is holding, growing, or eroding.
- 15% UK SME market share, ~900,000 UK members
- £190m FY2024 revenue, up 55% YoY
- £26m group loss FY2024 despite UK profit
- No full UK banking license means Tide funds are safeguarded but not FSCS-protected, unlike Revolut post-March 2026.
- Well-capitalized Revolut now closes Tide's main differentiation gap in UK SME banking.
- Tide Holdings posted a £26m group loss in FY2024 while funding capital-intensive India and Europe expansion.
- Financial Ombudsman has ruled against Tide in at least one scam-liability dispute, indicating fraud exposure.
- Third-party revenue estimates for Tide vary wildly ($19m to $824.9m), creating data reliability uncertainty.
| Rival | Direction | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Revolut Business | losing to | Revolut gained full UK banking license and FSCS protection in March 2026, closing Tide's key gap |
| Starling Bank | contesting | Starling already FSCS-protected and profitable with 500,000+ SME customers, per sacra.com data |
| Monzo Business | contesting | Monzo holds full banking license, FSCS-protected, valued at £4.56bn as of May 2024 |
| HSBC, Barclays, Lloyds, NatWest | gaining on | High-street banks structurally can't profitably serve micro-SMEs Tide targets, per brief analysis |
- Is Tide profitable in 2026?
- Tide's UK core business is structurally profitable, per CEO Oliver Prill, and revenue hit £190m in FY2024, up 55% YoY. But Tide Holdings as a whole posted a £26m group loss in FY2024, largely due to India and European expansion costs, as of May 2026.
- Who owns Tide the fintech company?
- Tide is privately held, with no public listing planned. In September 2025 it raised $120m in a Series C extension led by TPG's Rise Fund, reaching a $1.5bn 'unicorn' valuation. Other investors include Apax Digital, SBI Group, Anthemis, and Augmentum Fintech.
- Who is Tide's biggest competitor?
- Revolut Business is Tide's most pressing rival after obtaining a full UK banking license in March 2026, which gives it FSCS protection that Tide, as an e-money institution, still lacks. Starling and Monzo Business, both already FSCS-protected, also compete directly for UK SME accounts.
- Could AI replace Tide's banking platform?
- Unlikely soon. Tide already uses generative AI internally, cutting support ticket-handling time about 10% via a Faculty-built tool, but its regulated e-money license, safeguarding infrastructure, and accounting-software integrations across 2 million members are hard for an AI-only entrant to replicate as of mid-2026.
- Is Tide FSCS protected?
- No. As of July 2026, Tide operates under an e-money institution license, not a full UK banking license, so customer funds are 'safeguarded' but not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, unlike Starling, Monzo, and now Revolut Business after its March 2026 license.
- How many customers does Tide have?
- Tide passed 2 million members globally as of May 2026, including roughly 900,000 in the UK, giving it about 15% UK SME market share, and over 1.1 million in India, its fastest-growing market since launching there in December 2022.
