The call

Trade Republic sits on real banking licences and €150bn in assets, with the open question being whether fees replace PFOF revenue as well as rivals hoped they wouldn't.

Trade Republic lets everyday investors buy stocks, crypto, and other investments through a phone app, competing mainly against other neobrokers like Scalable and Revolut rather than traditional banks or AI tools. It is hard to replace because it holds a real banking license from European regulators, manages billions in customer deposits, and has built up 10 million customers who would have to switch elsewhere; neither AI chatbots nor old-school banks like Deutsche Bank can easily copy this combination, since the regulators control who gets banking licenses and the company has already proven it can make money (€35 million profit last year). The one thing that could change everything is the EU ban on payment-for-order-flow starting June 2026: if Trade Republic cannot charge customers enough through new execution fees and deposit income to replace that 30 percent of its previous money stream, its profits could shrink fast.

Why
01
AI pressure: XTB AI analytical chat (Germany launch). AI chat features help rivals compete on advice, but can't replicate Trade Republic's banking licence or deposit base. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Revolut. Revolut could push commission-free investing to its 40M+ users, pulling share in Trade Republic's home turf. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Full ECB banking licence plus BaFin trading venue and MiCA crypto approval, licences rivals and AI can't just copy.
What would change this call
Trade Republic's post-30-June-2026 quarterly revenue disclosures after the EU PFOF ban. Shows whether new execution fees and banking income offset lost PFOF revenue.
XTB's Germany rollout with AI analytical chat gaining measurable local user or asset share. Would indicate a peer broker directly pulling German market share from Trade Republic.
Outcome of the Verbraucherzentrale Baden-Württemberg lawsuit or any BaFin enforcement action. Would show regulatory pressure on customer-service or transfer practices.
