The call

Ulta is still growing sales and profit every quarter while Sephora pulls ahead with younger shoppers, leaving a two-player race where today's numbers look fine and tomorrow's customer base is the open question.

Ulta Beauty runs about 1,500 stores across the US and sells makeup, skincare, and hair products, along with in-store salon services. It is hard to copy because Ulta owns its own stores, has a rewards program that keeps customers loyal, sells brands that are only available at Ulta, and runs its own advertising business where beauty brands pay to show up in the app. The real threat is Sephora, which is owned by a much larger luxury company and has become more popular with teenagers, and also AI shopping assistants like Google's Gemini or ChatGPT that could eventually let customers ask an AI what to buy instead of going to Ulta or Sephora at all. If young customers keep choosing Sephora over Ulta, or if AI shopping takes over how people discover beauty products, Ulta's profits could shrink.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google Gemini / ChatGPT agentic shopping. AI shopping agents currently route customers to Ulta for fulfillment, but could later pick merchants directly and skip Ulta's loyalty relationship. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Sephora (LVMH). Sephora now leads Ulta 36% to 27% in teen mindshare and has 30x more products listed on Amazon, though Ulta's total sales keep growing. Could a giant copy it? Probably.
03
What protects it. Loyalty membership tied to over 95% of sales, plus exclusive brand deals and a store and salon network Sephora doesn't fully match.
What would change this call
Ulta comp-sales growth in next two quarterly reports (post Aug 2026). Whether Sephora's Gen Z lead is starting to dent Ulta's overall sales growth.
Target ends 'Ulta Beauty at Target' partnership around August 2026. Loss of that distribution channel could show up as a revenue or traffic hit.

Questions people ask
Is Ulta Beauty profitable in 2026?
Yes. In Q1 FY2026 (quarter ended May 2, 2026), Ulta reported operating income of $448.3M, up 11.6% YoY, and diluted EPS of $7.74, up 15.5% YoY, per its June 2, 2026 earnings release.
Is Ulta Beauty losing to Sephora among Gen Z?
Yes on mindshare. Piper Sandler's fall 2024 teen survey found Sephora led with 36% mindshare versus Ulta's 27%. Ulta's overall business kept growing anyway, with comp sales up 5.3% in Q1 FY2026 (May 2026).
Could AI replace Ulta Beauty?
Unlikely to fully replace it. On April 22, 2026, Ulta launched a Gemini-enabled 'Ulta AI' shopping assistant with Google Cloud via the Universal Commerce Protocol, using AI as a discovery feed into its loyalty base, which drives over 95% of sales, rather than a bypass.
Who is Ulta Beauty's biggest competitor?
Sephora, owned by LVMH, is Ulta's primary rival. Sephora led teen mindshare 36% to Ulta's 27% (Piper Sandler, fall 2024) and stocked roughly 30x more SKUs on Amazon (December 2025), forming a two-player beauty retail duopoly.
What happened to the Ulta Beauty at Target partnership?
Ulta and Target mutually agreed not to renew their in-store shop partnership, which had reached about 600 locations short of an original 800-store goal; the wind-down is ending around August 2026.
Is Ulta Beauty still growing despite Sephora competition?
Yes. Q1 FY2026 (ended May 2, 2026) net sales rose 11.1% to $3.16B with comparable sales up 5.3%, and Ulta raised full-year FY2026 guidance to $13.1-13.3B in revenue in June 2026.
