The call

Upstox is profitable and licensed but is losing active traders to bigger rivals every quarter, with no AI threat yet, just larger competitors outgrowing it.

Upstox lets Indians buy and sell stocks online cheaply, and it actually makes real money (over 200 crore rupees in profit last year). But it is shrinking: it lost about one-fifth of its market share in just a few months, and bigger competitors like Zerodha and Groww are winning customers with better apps and stronger brands. The government is also making it harder for all brokers to make money by raising fees and blocking certain kinds of ads. The thing to watch is whether Upstox can start growing its core business again in the next few months, or if it keeps relying on side income to look profitable.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI rival named yet; Upstox is building its own AI developer APIs (MCP, Agent Skills) to add third-party volume. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Groww, Zerodha, Angel One, and revived full-service brokers like ICICI Securities and Kotak Securities. Bigger rivals are pulling active traders away, cutting Upstox's NSE active-client share from 5.58% to 4.35% in FY26. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. A real SEBI broker license, established compliance systems, and an actual Rs215 cr FY25 profit keep it running despite share losses.

Questions people ask
Is Upstox profitable in 2026?
Yes. Upstox posted FY25 net profit of Rs 215 crore, up 21.5% from Rs 177 crore in FY24, on flat operating revenue of Rs 945 crore (year ended March 31, 2025). Management targets ~Rs 500 crore profit for FY26, a 2.3x jump, per CEO Ravi Kumar in February 2026.
Is Upstox losing market share to competitors?
Yes. Upstox's NSE active-client share fell from 5.58% to 4.35% during FY26 (per Kotak Institutional Equities, reported April 15, 2026), the sharpest decline among large brokers, while active clients dropped from 2.89 million (Dec 2024) to 1.89 million (June 30, 2026).
Who owns Upstox?
Upstox is privately held. Per a September 27, 2025 captable snapshot, Tiger Global Management is the largest shareholder with 38.5%, while founders (Ravi Kumar, Raghu Kumar, Shrinivas Viswanath, Kavitha Subramanian) collectively hold about 36.1%. No IPO has occurred.
Who is Upstox's biggest competitor?
Groww is Upstox's biggest rival, holding about 28.7% of NSE active-client share (1.30 crore clients) as of June 30, 2026, versus Upstox's 4.15%. Zerodha (15.08%) and Angel One (14.79%) also far outsize Upstox in both clients and revenue.
Will Upstox IPO soon?
No near-term plans. CEO Ravi Kumar said in a February 10, 2026 interview that Upstox is 'not in a hurry' for an IPO, choosing instead to prioritize hitting its FY26 profit target of roughly Rs 500 crore and diversifying into MTF, mutual funds, insurance and fixed deposits.
Could AI replace Upstox as a broker?
Not directly, since order execution legally requires a SEBI-licensed broker like Upstox, which also holds NSE/BSE/MCX trading-member status. But Upstox itself deployed an AI 'Trading Copilot' by February 9, 2026 cutting agent handovers 35%, showing AI is already replacing human support roles internally.
