The call

Uzum runs most of Uzbekistan's digital commerce and banking at a profit, with its credit book and open banking rules as the parts to watch before a 2027 listing.

Uzum is a single app that lets Uzbeks buy things online, borrow money, and send payments, all run by one company that also owns its own bank and delivery trucks. It is hard to copy because it has its own banking license, owns the technology that runs the bank, knows how millions of unbanked customers borrow and spend, and built a delivery network from scratch, but a competitor like Payme (which is owned by a big bank) or the government could eventually build something similar if they spend enough money and time. The one thing that could change everything is if the government forces Uzum to share its payment technology with rivals, if someone else actually builds a real shopping and lending competitor, or if credit customers stop paying back their loans before the company tries to sell stock in 2027.

Why
01
AI pressure: Uzbekistan government's announced AI-based SME lending platform. A state AI lending tool tied to e-government data could underwrite SMEs directly, bypassing Uzum's own credit scoring. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Payme (TBC Bank Group's Uzbek fintech arm). Payme already has about 10M users in payments but has not built a marketplace or logistics layer to match Uzum. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Owns a banking license, proprietary payment rails, first party data on 20M users, and its own delivery network built from scratch.
What would change this call
Payme or Humans launches a marketplace plus logistics stack in Uzbekistan within 12 months. Would show a rival is finally matching Uzum's super-app model and could pull share.
Uzbekistan's Central Bank finalizes mandatory open-banking or QR interoperability rules. Would show regulation forcing Uzum's payment rails open, weakening its checkout lock-in.
Uzum's unsecured loan book or Kapitalbank's portfolio shows rising default rates in earnings disclosures. Would show credit-cycle stress impairing the $400M+ lending book.
Key numbers
  • FY2025 revenue $691M, up from $505M in FY2024 (2026-03-10)
  • 20M monthly users, over half of Uzbekistan's adults (2026-03-10)
  • Unsecured loan book reached $400M (2026-03-10)
Named risks
  • Currency or credit-cycle shock could impair $400M unsecured loan book and Kapitalbank's $3.1B portfolio. Severity: high
  • Mandatory open-banking interoperability and BNPL oversight could compress payment/checkout moat before 2027 IPO. Severity: medium
  • 2027 IPO venue (London, Nasdaq, Abu Dhabi, Hong Kong) and pre-IPO raise terms remain undecided. Severity: medium
  • Antimonopoly designation as dominant digital platform brings active regulatory monitoring on pricing and bundling. Severity: low

Questions people ask
Is Uzum profitable?
Yes. Uzum reported FY2025 net income of $176M on revenue of $691M, up from $150M net income on $505M revenue in FY2024, according to figures reported 2026-03-10. Its marketplace arm also reached EBITDA profitability after three years of operation.
Who owns Uzum and is it public?
Uzum is privately held, backed by Tencent, VR Capital, FinSight Ventures and Omani sovereign entities. It is not publicly traded but is targeting a 2027 IPO after a March 2026 investment of $130M+ set a $2.3B pre-money valuation.
Could AI replace Uzum?
No confirmed frontier AI model has been integrated into Uzum's consumer products as of 2026. Its moat is a regulated banking license, owned core-banking rails, and physical logistics built from zero, which AI models cannot replicate without a license and warehouse network.
Who is Uzum's biggest competitor?
Payme, part of TBC Bank Group's Uzbekistan operations, is described as Uzum's clearest fintech-led challenger with around 10 million registered users, but it lacks Uzum's marketplace and logistics integration as of 2026.
How many users does Uzum have?
Uzum reported roughly 20 million monthly active users as of March 2026, up from about 10 million in 2024, representing more than half of Uzbekistan's adult population of roughly 36 million.
Is Uzum a safe company to join?
Uzum employed about 12,500 people as of March 2026 and is profitable with $176M net income in FY2025, but carries emerging-market credit risk from a $400M unsecured loan book and faces regulatory tightening on BNPL and open banking.
