The call

Vela runs a generic scheduling agent on top of tools Google, Microsoft, and Cal.com already control, with no named enterprise logos yet to test its recruiting-lock-in pitch.

Vela is an AI assistant that schedules meetings by reading emails, texts, and WhatsApp messages, then coordinates times between people automatically. The problem is that Google Calendar, Microsoft Outlook, and Cal.com (a competitor) can all build the same thing themselves, and Google and Microsoft have no reason to avoid it since they already own email and calendar. The one thing that might save Vela is if it can lock itself into hiring companies' recruiting workflows so tightly that it becomes too hard to rip out, similar to how specialized software becomes essential in other industries, rather than trying to stay a general scheduling tool where it will face constant pressure from bigger players.

Why
01
AI pressure: Cal.com's Cal AI scheduling agent. Cal.com already runs an AI scheduling agent inside its own platform, competing directly with Vela's standalone pitch. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Google Calendar/Gmail and Microsoft Outlook/365. Google and Microsoft own the inbox and calendar and can add native scheduling agents anytime, with no revenue to lose by doing it. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. No proprietary data or lock-in confirmed yet; the pitch rests on unverified enterprise usage claims.
What would change this call
Vela reports a priced seed or Series A round by Q4 2026. Shows investors believe the standalone scheduling niche has staying power.
Google or Microsoft ships native agentic multi-party scheduling in Gmail/Outlook. Would directly absorb Vela's core use case into free platform tools.
Vela announces named ATS integration (Greenhouse, Ashby) with retained enterprise logos. Would show a defensible recruiting vertical rather than easily replicated horizontal scheduling.

Questions people ask
Is Vela profitable in 2026?
No public profitability data exists. Vela is a pre-seed startup that raised about $500K led by Y Combinator, reported as of July 27, 2026, with no priced seed round or audited revenue disclosed since its February 6, 2026 YC launch.
Could Google or Microsoft replace Vela?
Yes, structurally. Vela's core loop of reading email threads, proposing times, and chasing non-responders is generic LLM agent tool-use. Google Calendar/Gmail and Microsoft Outlook/365 already own the inbox and calendar and face no revenue cannibalization risk in shipping this natively.
Who is Vela's biggest competitor?
Skej operates a near-identical CC-into-email/Slack/WhatsApp thread UX as of July 20, 2026. Cal.com already shipped its own conversational booking feature, Cal AI, by June 4, 2026, and Lindy AI ships natural-language scheduling, making the field crowded for the 6-person Vela team.
Who owns Vela the AI scheduling company?
Vela is privately founder-owned, started around 2025 by brothers Gobhanu Sasankar Korisepati and Saatvik Suryajit Korisepati, backed by Y Combinator (lead), Pareto Holdings, Z Fellows, and angel Cory Levy, with no acquisition or parent company reported as of July 27, 2026.
How much funding has Vela raised?
Vela raised approximately $500K in a pre-seed round led by Y Combinator, per a July 27, 2026 report, with additional named backers Pareto Holdings, Z Fellows, and angel investor Cory Levy. No later or priced seed round had been reported as of that date.
What happened to Clockwise, and does it threaten Vela?
Clockwise, a rival AI calendar tool, shut down in March 2026, reportedly displacing over 40,000 organizations per Reclaim.ai's own count. Reclaim.ai, not Vela, positioned itself as the recommended migration path, showing standalone scheduling tools can fail even at scale.
