The call

A regional content aggregator squeezed between AI answer engines that skip it and global short-video apps that outcompete it, while its own audited numbers are still being untangled.

VerSe Innovation owns Dailyhunt, an app that shows users news stories and short videos from across the internet. It is easy for bigger companies to copy: Meta has Instagram Reels, Google has YouTube Shorts and AI search results that show information without needing an app in the middle. The company's financial reports were questioned by auditors in 2024, and one of its products (Josh) lost 80 percent of its users. The one thing that could matter is whether a new independent audit by PwC in 2026 clears up the accounting questions and whether the user losses stop.

Why
01
AI pressure: Google Gemini/AI Overviews and generative chat assistants. AI Overviews and chat assistants answer queries directly, cutting the clicks that used to land on Dailyhunt's aggregated feed. Could AI do the core job? Yes, likely.
02
Bigger players: Meta Instagram Reels and Google YouTube Shorts. Josh lost over 80% of monthly downloads and about half its MAUs since mid-2023 as creators and viewers moved to Reels and Shorts. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Deep regional-language content library and a large existing India user base that still opens the app daily.

Questions people ask
Is VerSe Innovation (Dailyhunt) profitable in 2026?
Not yet confirmed. VerSe's FY25 EBITDA margin improved from -89% to -38% and the company targeted group-level EBITDA break-even in H2 FY26 (Oct 2025 to Mar 2026), per its own September 2025 press release, but this was a forward guidance claim, not an audited result.
Is Josh losing users to Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Josh saw over an 80% drop in monthly downloads and roughly a 50% decline in monthly active users since mid-2023, driven by publisher exodus and content-moderation issues, per Inc42 reporting dated July 24, 2024.
Who owns VerSe Innovation and what is it worth?
VerSe is privately held, last valued at about $5 billion after an $805 million Series J round led by CPPIB in April 2022. ByteDance fully exited its roughly 9.8% stake in June 2022 at a 56% discount to that valuation, receiving about $102.7 million.
Could AI replace Dailyhunt's core function?
VerSe itself automated content curation, summarization and recommendation via AI/ML starting in 2024, tying this directly to hundreds of layoffs, including a 350-person cut in May 2025. This suggests aggregator-style workflows are already being displaced by AI internally.
What is the Builder.ai allegation against VerSe Innovation?
Bloomberg-sourced reporting from June 1, 2025 alleged VerSe and the now-bankrupt Builder.ai engaged in round-tripping, billing each other roughly $60 million from 2021 to 2024 for services not rendered to inflate sales. VerSe called the claim baseless and defamatory; it remains unresolved.
When will VerSe Innovation IPO?
VerSe told institutional investors in August 2025 it is targeting an IPO before March 2027, with Avendus Capital likely to advise, according to Financial Express reporting dated August 18, 2025.
