The call

Verto has real African FX infrastructure but faces peers with far deeper pockets while its last priced funding round dates to 2021.

Verto helps businesses send money across African countries and handles currency exchanges, which requires hard-to-get licenses and connections to banks. The company has real advantages from these connections and experience, but bigger, richer competitors like Flutterwave, Airwallex, Nium, and Thunes have the same advantages and way more money to spend. The prices everyone charges for this service keep dropping, so Verto's profit margins are shrinking, and the company has not raised new funding in five years, making it hard to compete. If Verto can secure a major funding round soon and prove it is making money while keeping costs down, it might stay relevant, but right now it looks like it is losing ground to better-funded rivals.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. No AI agent or model directly threatens FX settlement and licensing work, though AI-driven treasury tools could later squeeze spreads. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Flutterwave, Airwallex, Nium, and Thunes. Rivals with the same licenses and bank rails but 10 to 100 times more capital compress Verto's FX spreads and chase its corridors. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Licenses across Nigeria, Kenya, and the UAE plus years of bank rail integrations built to move hard currency through capital controls.
What would change this call
Verto closes a Series B round within 12 months and discloses terms. Shows whether investors still see it as a credible standalone contender versus peers.
Independent audit or third-party confirmation of the claimed $25B annual volume figure. Would verify whether Verto's self-reported growth is real or overstated.
Flutterwave, Airwallex, or Nium cut cross-border FX take rates in African corridors. Would show peer price competition squeezing Verto's margins.

Questions people ask
Is Verto (VertoFX) profitable in 2026?
Verto has not disclosed audited profitability. Third-party estimates put annual revenue at $35.2M to $51.6M (ZoomInfo, July 2026; Growjo, undated), but these are algorithmic guesses, not company-confirmed figures, so profitability status remains unverified as of July 2026.
Who owns Verto, the cross-border payments company?
Verto is privately held and venture-backed, co-founded in 2017 by Ola Oyetayo and Anthony Oduwole. It has raised roughly $12 to 13 million total, led by Accelerated Digital Ventures (2019 seed) and Quona Capital (2021 Series A), with no acquisition or IPO as of July 2026.
Could AI replace Verto's business?
Unlikely soon: Verto's moat is regulatory licensing and banking-rail access across ~49 emerging-market currencies, which AI cannot originate. AI is only used for onboarding (per a January 2026 company blog post), not to replace FX liquidity access or Nigeria/Kenya licensing.
Who is Verto's biggest competitor?
Flutterwave, valued at $3.2 billion as of June 2026 and Africa-focused like Verto, is its closest rival, alongside better-capitalized Airwallex and Nium. All target the same cross-border B2B corridors Verto serves, per CB Insights competitor tracking (2026).
Has Verto raised a Series B round?
No. As of July 2026, Verto's last priced equity round was a $10 million Series A in September 2021 led by Quona Capital. No Series B has been publicly confirmed, per Caplight funding data dated April 2026, roughly five years since its last raise.
What is Verto's transaction volume as of 2026?
Verto states it processes over $25 billion annually for more than 5,000 businesses as of June 2026 (company-reported, technext24), up from a self-reported $250 million per month in June 2025, an unaudited jump the company has not reconciled publicly.
