The call

Viettel's risk sits in politics and governance, not in competition: no rival, AI-driven or otherwise, is currently pulling customers away from it.

Viettel Group is Vietnam's biggest mobile phone and internet company, owned by the government. It is very hard to copy because the government gave it special licenses, owns all the phone towers and fiber cables nationwide, and won't let private companies or foreign ones do what Viettel does. The company makes more money each year and is also starting to do business in other countries. The biggest risk is not from rival phone companies but from Vietnam's government crackdowns on big state companies, which could change how Viettel runs or what it is allowed to do.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI shows up as a build-out target, not a rival: Viettel is spending on data centers and a chip fab to run AI, not losing customers to it. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: None apparent. Domestic rivals VNPT and MobiFone hold spectrum too, but none can match Viettel's military-linked status or nationwide network reach. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. 100% state ownership under the Ministry of National Defence, spectrum licenses, and a network that covers the whole country give it a position no private or foreign player can copy.
What would change this call
Any Blazing Furnace indictment naming Viettel leadership. Would show governance risk materializing at Vietnam's dominant state telecom.
An Khanh Data Center Phase 1 launch timing versus Q2 2026 target. Would show whether Viettel's infrastructure expansion is on schedule.
Semiconductor fab reaching trial production by end-2027. Would show whether Viettel's tech diversification plans are delivering on time.

Questions people ask
Is Viettel Group profitable in 2026?
Yes. Viettel Group reported 2025 pre-tax profit of VND 56.8 trillion (about USD 2.16 billion), up 4.5% year over year, on consolidated revenue of VND 220.4 trillion (about USD 8.39 billion), up 13.8%, as reported February 23, 2026.
Who owns Viettel Group?
Viettel Group is 100% state-owned, operating as a single-member limited liability enterprise under Vietnam's Ministry of National Defence. It is not publicly traded and has never taken outside funding; its listed subsidiaries include Viettel Global (VGI) and Viettel Construction (CTR).
Could AI replace Viettel's business?
No. Viettel's core value is state-granted spectrum, military-enterprise status, and physical fiber, tower, and data-center infrastructure that AI cannot replicate. Viettel instead deploys AI internally, including the Intel-built netMind cognitive network platform whitepapered June 24, 2026.
Who is Viettel's biggest competitor?
Domestically, VNPT/Vinaphone (about 21% mobile share) and MobiFone (about 17.9%, transferred to Vietnam's Ministry of Public Security in February 2025) are Viettel's closest peers, but Viettel holds 56.3% of Vietnam's mobile market per 2023 ICT White Book data, well ahead of both.
Is Viettel building 6G or semiconductor chips?
Yes to both. Viettel broke ground on a Hanoi chip fab in January 2026 targeting 32nm trial production by end-2027, and on July 24, 2026 became Qualcomm's first global 6G Platform Early Access partner, targeting a pre-commercial 6G call by early 2029.
Is Viettel expanding internationally?
Yes. Viettel Global's 2025 net revenue reached VND 44.27 trillion (about USD 1.74 billion), up 25% year over year, the highest since Viettel began overseas investing, with a 92% capital recovery ratio as of April 3, 2026.
