The call

VK dominates Russia's social media by law, not by profit, propped up by state cash while losses stack up and Western sanctions close in.

VK Group owns VKontakte, Russia's biggest social network, forced onto all Russian phones by the government while competitors like Yandex and WhatsApp are blocked. The company loses money every year despite this protection, survives only through forced capital raises and state money, and is being cut off from Western technology and app stores through EU sanctions. The real question is whether government protection can keep the company alive when it cannot make money on its own, and whether Western sanctions will eventually make the service unusable.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. VK's AI work stays internal, feed ranking and voice transcription for surveillance, with no exposure to outside AI models. Could AI do the core job? Unlikely.
02
Bigger players: Yandex. Yandex has stronger tech and could outcompete VK, but state policy funnels users and hotel/government mandates to VK's MAX instead. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. A state law forcing MAX onto every Russian device and throttling rivals like WhatsApp, not any market advantage.

Questions people ask
Is VK Group profitable in 2026?
No. VK posted a net loss of RUB 24.9bn (about $288.8m) for FY2025, its sixth consecutive annual loss despite revenue growing 8% YoY to RUB 159.9bn, per Moscow Times reporting dated 2026-03-19.
Who owns VK Group?
VK is majority controlled by Kremlin-linked entities: Gazprom-Media and insurer Sogaz hold a combined controlling voting stake since a December 2021 restructuring, with Sogaz holding over 25% of voting rights, per Moscow Times, 2021-12-03.
Is VK Group's biggest competitor Yandex or Telegram?
Domestically Yandex is VK's chief tech rival, but in messaging Telegram is the closer threat: it retained about 96 million registered Russian users and daily use by six in ten Russians as of mid 2026, despite state throttling, per CPJ, 2026-06-26.
Could AI replace VK Group's business?
Unlikely. VK's moat is regulatory, not technological: its MAX super-app is mandatorily pre-installed on all Russian devices since September 2025 and rivals like WhatsApp are state-blocked, protections no general AI model can replicate, per Moscow Times, 2025-08-28.
Did the EU sanction VK Group?
Yes. The EU sanctioned VK Company and its subsidiary Communication Platform LLC on 13 July 2026 over the MAX app's alleged surveillance and censorship role, imposing an asset freeze and barring EU funding, per Moscow Times and Euronews.
Is VK Group's MAX app a WhatsApp replacement in Russia?
MAX has been mandatorily pre-installed on all devices sold in Russia since September 2025 and claims over 100 million registered accounts, but Telegram still leads daily usage among Russians as of June 2026, per CPJ and Moscow Times.
