The call

Vodafone's network and licenses keep it standing, but activist pressure from Xavier Niel and a stalled Vodafone Idea debt raise are the things to watch.

Vodafone owns cell towers, spectrum licenses, and millions of customer contracts across Europe and India, making it very difficult for a new competitor to simply start over from scratch. The company faces real problems right now: it has lost ground to rivals like Deutsche Telekom in Germany and BT in the UK, its Indian subsidiary is buried in debt, and a new activist investor named Xavier Niel is pushing for major changes. The big question mark is whether Xavier Niel's push to restructure and cut costs will actually fix things or just cause more disruption while rivals keep stealing customers.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. AI chatbots like TOBi cut Vodafone's own customer service costs by 70%, it helps the cost side rather than threatening the network business. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Deutsche Telekom, BT/EE, Jio and Airtel. BT overtook Vodafone as the UK's largest telco in 2026, and Deutsche Telekom holds 35% share in Germany versus Vodafone's 25%. Could a giant copy it? No, they are blocked.
03
What protects it. Spectrum licenses, towers, fiber and government relationships across dozens of countries are not something a rival can just build overnight.

Questions people ask
Is Vodafone Group profitable in 2026?
Vodafone's FY26 (ended March 31, 2026) revenue rose 8.05% to 40.46 billion euros with adjusted EBITDAaL organic growth of 4.5%, at the upper end of guidance, and adjusted free cash flow of 2.6 billion euros, per its May 2026 Q4 transcript. FY25 had shown an operating loss of 0.4 billion euros due to goodwill impairments.
Who owns Vodafone Group now?
Vodafone remains publicly traded on the London Stock Exchange with no parent company. French billionaire Xavier Niel, via his vehicle Vega, became the largest shareholder after buying e&'s entire 16.2 to 16.3 percent stake for roughly 4.4 billion pounds, a deal completed July 17, 2026.
Could AI replace Vodafone's customer service jobs?
Vodafone's TOBi chatbot already handles about 45 million customer queries per month across 13 countries, and the company reports a 70 percent reduction in cost-per-chat from AI as of April 2026. Back-office shared services unit VOIS, with about 30,000 staff, is shifting to an AI-first model as of July 2026, exposing customer service and back-office roles to automation.
Is Vodafone losing to BT in the UK?
Yes, in market position terms: BT overtook Vodafone as the UK's largest telco by some measures in 2026, according to a March 19, 2026 report, even though VodafoneThree, formed May 31, 2025, claims about 27 million customers as the UK's largest mobile operator by that different metric.
Is Vodafone's business in India at risk?
Vodafone Idea's 35,000 crore rupee debt raise remained stalled as of July 20, 2026, pending promoter guarantees from Vodafone and Aditya Birla Group. Vi's ARPU of 190 rupees per quarter trails Jio's 214 and Airtel's 257, though subscribers stabilized near 192.8 million after the Indian government converted about 36,950 crore rupees of dues to equity in March 2025.
Is Vodafone Group a safe employer to join right now?
Vodafone's core network and licenses are structurally hard to disrupt, but headcount has been shrinking: independent Revelio Labs data shows employees fell from 87,651 in 2023 to 79,331 by Q4 2025, a roughly 9.5 percent cumulative drop, alongside a 2023 plan to cut about 11,000 jobs across Europe over three years.
