The call

Vi's survival now rests more on government support than on winning customers back from Jio and Airtel.

Vodafone Idea is a mobile phone carrier in India that is bleeding cash, losing 5,000 to 5,600 crore rupees every three months. The company survives because the Indian government owns almost half of it and has forgiven massive old debts, but this political help could disappear. Two bigger rivals, Jio and Airtel, keep stealing its customers because they are stronger and there is nothing stopping people from switching to them, so the company's one real chance is if it can actually raise the 25,000 crore rupees it says it will borrow and then stop the customer losses by improving its network or cutting costs fast enough to finally make money again.

Why
01
AI pressure: None apparent. Rising data and AI app usage is feeding Vi's network revenue, not eating it, average data use is up 26.7% YoY. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. Jio (493M) and Airtel (472M) subs dwarf Vi's 193M, Vi has shed about 85 million subscribers over five years. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. The Indian government now owns about 49% of Vi after converting dues to equity, giving it a political reason to keep the company alive.
What would change this call
TRAI monthly data shows Vi net subscriber adds continuing through May and June 2026. Would show the recent turnaround is real, not a one off blip.
Vi closes its ₹25,000 crore bank debt plus ₹10,000 crore facility raise on secured terms. Would show lenders trust Vi's turnaround enough to fund network capex.
Q1 FY27 results land near or better than Nomura's ₹5,600 crore loss forecast. Would show losses are stabilizing rather than deepening despite tariff hikes.

Questions people ask
Is Vodafone Idea profitable in 2026?
No. Vi posted a net loss of ₹5,286 crore on revenue of ₹11,323 crore for the quarter ended December 2025, and Nomura's July 2026 preview forecasts a similar ~₹5,600 crore loss for the June 2026 quarter, per Financial Express (2026-07-08).
Who owns Vodafone Idea now?
The Indian government became Vi's largest shareholder, holding about 48.99% after converting ₹36,950 crore of dues into equity in March/April 2025. Vodafone Group's stake fell to roughly 16.1% and Aditya Birla Group's to about 9.4%, per CNBC-TV18 (2025-03-31).
Is Vodafone Idea losing subscribers to Jio and Airtel?
Yes, chronically. Vi lost about 85 million subscribers over five years, falling from a March 2021 peak of ~283.7 million to ~199 million by December 2025, versus Jio's ~493 million and Airtel's ~472 million as of April 2026, per Livemint.
Could AI replace Vodafone Idea's business?
Unlikely directly, since Vi's core product is licensed spectrum and physical network infrastructure that AI cannot substitute. However, AI-chip-driven demand is reportedly pushing Ericsson and Nokia to raise equipment prices, adding cost pressure to Vi's mid-rollout 5G buildout as of July 2026.
Is it safe to take a job at Vodafone Idea?
Mixed. Vi has government backing (48.99% state stake) and AGR relief, but posted a ₹5,286 crore net loss in the December 2025 quarter and still needs to secure ₹25,000 crore in bank debt plus ₹10,000 crore in non-fund facilities as of April 2026, per Livemint.
Who is Vodafone Idea's biggest competitor?
Reliance Jio (~493 million subscribers) and Bharti Airtel (~472 million subscribers) both dwarf Vi's ~193 million subscribers as of April 2026, per Livemint, and both have already largely completed nationwide 5G rollouts ahead of Vi.
