The call

Wall Street English still fills centers and signs corporate deals, but its self-study layer faces free AI competition while its PE owners sit past a typical hold window.

Wall Street English runs physical English learning centers in 35 to 41 countries with about 200,000 students, mostly teaching through self-study courses mixed with in-person classes. The company is getting squeezed from two sides: free tools like ChatGPT and Duolingo can now do what Wall Street English's self-study product does, and competitors like Berlitz are already using AI to teach the same lessons cheaper. The biggest threat is that its owners have owned it since 2018 and may need to sell soon, which could force a fire sale if profits keep falling, especially after its huge China operation shut down in 2021 when the government cracked down on education companies.

Why
01
AI pressure: Duolingo Max, ChatGPT Voice, ElevenLabs-style conversational agents. Free AI tools now cover vocabulary drills and speaking practice, the exact self-study half of WSE's curriculum. Could AI do the core job? Only partly.
02
Bigger players: Berlitz Corporation. Berlitz has already deployed Azure OpenAI tools to tens of thousands of customers, matching WSE's hybrid pitch at scale. Could a giant copy it? Yes, easily.
03
What protects it. Physical centers and live coaching still anchor corporate contracts and CEFR-certified outcomes that free apps don't guarantee.
What would change this call
Berlitz publicly reports enterprise client wins tied to its Azure OpenAI deployment within 12 months. Would show a direct rival converting WSE's corporate B2B segment using AI.
Duolingo Max speaking-practice user numbers or retention stats reported in earnings calls. Would show free AI substituting for WSE's self-study curriculum at scale.
Asia Strategic Holdings (LSE: ASIA) RNS disclosure of a franchise closure or writedown in Myanmar or Vietnam. Would show franchise-model vulnerability repeating outside China.

Questions people ask
Is Wall Street English profitable in 2026?
No audited profit figures are public. CEO James McGowan said in April 2024 that revenue and enrollment had returned to pre-2019 levels with over 10% year-on-year growth, but Wall Street English is privately held and does not publish consolidated financials.
Could AI replace Wall Street English's courses?
The self-study and grammar-drilling half of its curriculum overlaps with free tools like Duolingo and ChatGPT voice mode. Wall Street English launched its own AI chatbot in December 2024 and a Conversation AI tool by October 2025, but live-teacher coaching in physical centers remains its main defense.
Who owns Wall Street English?
Baring Private Equity Asia (now EQT Private Capital Asia) and CITIC Capital bought the global business from Pearson plc for roughly 300 million dollars, closing March 15, 2018. That equity stake has now been held over seven years without a reported exit.
Who is Wall Street English's biggest competitor?
Berlitz Corporation is the closest rival and already scaled Azure OpenAI tools to tens of thousands of customers, per a Microsoft case study published July 24, 2025. EF Education First and China's New Oriental also compete directly with comparable or greater scale.
What happened to Wall Street English in China?
Its China operations, once the largest market with 70-plus centers and 3,000-plus staff, collapsed into bankruptcy in August 2021 amid a national tutoring-sector crackdown, owing students over 100 million yuan (about 15.4 million dollars) in unrefunded tuition.
How many countries does Wall Street English operate in?
Company material cites 35 countries in 2024 and 41 in 2025 marketing pages, with over 200,000 students taught and 19 new centers opened across 10 countries in 2024, including a new entry into Oman that year.
